Your diet is a strong determinant of your health status and it’s a good thing more people are realizing the importance of making the right choices when it comes to eating habits. But it appears eating healthy is now synonymous with eating expensive, particularly with the organic boom. Organic grade foods that are thought to be the healthiest usually cost a fortune, and it’s not uncommon to see someone give up on the resolution to eat healthy with the ‘I am broke and it’s expensive excuse’. But does it really have to be so? What if you could eat healthy without actually spending a fortune? Below are 6 tips you could find useful if this question has been on your mind.
Plan before shopping
If you want to eat healthy and still not go broke, you cannot afford to shop on impulse. You must have a weekly menu (at least) and a grocery list that supports the menu. This goes beyond simply planning dinners. You would need to factor lunch and breakfast into your plan since you wouldn’t want to eat just anything. You could even add a column for healthy snacks if you want to be really fastidious about it. If you plan your meals well, you would shop within your budget. You wouldn’t waste any money once you enter the grocery store.
Learn the cooking basics
If you want to eat healthy while staying within your budget, you have to cook for yourself. Unfortunately, there are no two ways about it. Most of the foods you order at restaurants may not be healthy. If you decide to eat out at restaurants that have an ‘organic only’ section, you would be spending more than a fortune as the meals there are always expensive. You’ll need to spend time preparing your meals for yourself. And if you do not know how to already, it is high time you started learning.
Do not waste anything
In the old days of buying fast foods, you could forget a hamburger somewhere in your home and not pay attention to it until it’s no longer edible. You cannot do this if you want to keep up with eating healthy. You need to properly store your foods and you cannot allow anything to go to waste. If there’s a leftover that needs to be eaten, incorporate it into your meal within a few days. Organic foods are expensive and wasting them would make them even more wallet-draining.
Shop at the perimeter of stores
The majority of the supplies you’ll be needing would be located at the perimeters of stores. It’s where they usually place the perishable foods that need to be sold out quickly. Most healthy foods fall into this category as they would not contain preservatives. Again, you need to be careful when shopping. Inspect the products properly before buying to ensure its still fresh and not close to spoilage already.
Try generic brands
Buying a popular branded product is not a prerequisite to eating healthy. The important thing is to ensure you are buying great quality and the generic brands can give you that too. Good thing is, they are always significantly cheaper than the name brands. Heck, they even smell and taste better sometimes. So why not get adventurous and save yourself some money while still eating healthy?
Take advantage of discounts and low prices
You would be surprised at how much you can save by timing your purchases. Some products are particularly cheap at some periods of the year. You could stock those products heavily during the cheap periods and refrigerate or use any other appropriate method of preservation. When the prices start going up, you would still enjoy your healthy meal without spending more. Also, grocery stores routinely offer discounts and coupons. You should take advantage of these bonus offers when you can.
The decision to eat healthy is certainly a big one and it takes a lot of determination to follow through. If the decision starts taking a toll on your finances, your resolve could break very easily. This is why you need to be smart about eating healthy and try to save in every way you can. Admittedly, eating healthy isn’t exactly cheap but the health benefits you’ll be getting makes it more than worth it.
