Millennials look at their current economic situation with despair. The feeling amongst them is that the boomers are the cause of their woes.
Boomers are considered to be a group of individuals who are self-serving, greedy, and short-sighted. But is this the case?
Let’s look at the debate that rages between these two generations on Reddit.
I Don’t Want to Talk About It
“My parents are Boomers. Looking back now, I realized that they would sink hard in today’s world and go down in a rage-filled screaming tantrum if they had things even half as bad as they were in the decades that I had to make my place in the world. But, because they were given all kinds of money, low housing costs, financial breaks, and money from their parents, they have come to believe that they “worked hard for what they have,” which is a $400 mortgage that my mother still acts like is a tremendous burden to pay. One time when she was bragging about owning a house I asked her what she would do to pay the 1500 a month rent that I do if she had to go back to work. She had a tantrum, yelled, cried, and told me she didn’t want to talk to me anymore for the day.”
Yes, the Boomers Did It
“My dad is a boomer and thankfully he fully realizes that his generation ruined the country and he sees how hard we have to grind to get sh** done. Meanwhile, he is 66 and still works 60-hour weeks on his feet in a hospital ER. So he’s pretty legit.”
The Boomers Have Voted
“And how did it get to be this way? The boomers came into the voting age in an era where there was some corporate control, limits to their power, better regulation, higher corporate tax, etc, etc. Boomers overwhelmingly voted for Reagan and corporate free-for-all.”
We’re All the Same (Well, Genxers and Boomers, at Least)
“No one has forgotten gen x; the sad fact of reality is that there are many gen xers who have the same mentality as the Boomers, there are some who are just as upset at our system as us younger gens, but in my experience, it’s less common than those with the boomer mentality.”
Hang On, the Boomers Screwed Over Genxers
“Gen-X was the first generation the Boomers s**t on. As adults, we lived through FOUR economic downturns: 1991-92, 2000-01, 2007-08, and whatever 2020 was. Currently, Xers are pretty much split politically 50/50. If you want to smear us as ‘younger Boomers,’ feel free. But you’d be wrong.”
Some Boomers Understand What They Have Done
“I’m a boomer (1960), but I clearly understand the nightmare that the following generations are dealing with. The education and training my employers gave me are unheard of today. That was in the 90s, not that long ago, but my experience just doesn’t apply today. It’s the same with housing. Wages have not matched reality, and the GOP and big business have convinced their voters that it’s immoral to be fair to people.”
It’s Not About Generations
“It’s not a ‘trend,’ and it’s not a generation; it’s capitalism. The owner class will continue to hoodwink the working class. Some of those 1 %ers will be millennials, but that doesn’t mean a working-class millennial has anything in common with them. A generational idol is a distraction from the class war.”
Yep, It’s Wealthy to Blame
“This is more generational warfare. Boomers are not the problem. Billionaires are the problem. Granted, most billionaires are boomers, but I digress. Many of our boomer parents struggled in the better economy of the 80s through the 2000s. It wasn’t easy for all of us. Let’s stop this generation’s warfare and recognize the elephant in the room. Billionaires have the government in their back pockets. It’s billionaires, not boomers, to blame for the mess we are in.”
Try and Look at Things Objectively
Each generation seems to blame the one before for the current economic situation—this breed’s intergenerational discontent and hate.
Millennials say that Boomers have screwed up the economy through their greed. Yet, some Boomers have some that such a conclusion isn’t fair.
Economic crises always happen. It’s cyclical. Once generations remove emotions from the debate, we can objectively discuss how to fix the issues.
