New laws are being put in place by the governors in Florida and Texas, stirring things up and making life more difficult for Latino communities. The law will crack down on businesses that hire undocumented workers by jacking up sanctions on companies that employ them. Companies must use a controversial E-Verify program when they hire new workers to verify registration and citizenship status in the United States. Undocumented immigrants in these states cannot get local ID cards and driver’s licenses.
The bill signed by Governor DeSantis(R) in Florida goes into effect on July 1st, and a video of empty businesses went viral in Latino communities in Florida, showing the concern and true fears members of these communities are feeling about this bill.
The bills being passed in Florida and Texas are setting up grounds for the most stringent restrictions on illegal immigrants in their state’s history. The end goal is to control the southern border with state laws better since federal laws are not helping.
Sad Statistics
One reader said, “Sadly, a lot of latinos in Florida, especially Cubans, vote Republican and voted for Trump.”
Another user stated, “What kind of headline is this, trying to disenfranchise the largest growing voting block? They don’t need to move if they don’t want, they can vote Republicans out. The party should be held accountable for the damage they’re doing.”
Lack of Support
One reader stated, “I am a Brazilian American. Brazil had its own Trump version. I live in the USA and you’d be surprised at the amount of Brazilians that favored both Trump and Bolsonaro. Brazilian churches were promoting both candidates. Brazilian men get a hard on anytime a fascist masquerading as a “macho man” run for office. I usually tell them they are chocking on the smallest mushroom out there. The thought process is that ‘I got my documents, — everyone else.'”
Boycott
A user commented, “You know what’s easier than a mass migration out of a state? Mass boycott of a state. If this bothers you: STOP VACATIONING IN FLORIDA!”
GOP Won the Hispanic Vote
A forum reader wrote, “Latinos VOTED for this stuff. In Florida the GOP won the Hispanic vote by quite the large and unexpected margin in 2022, in Texas it was about even split.”
Another user said, “People say this all the time, but Latinos have voted Republican in greater numbers over the last few elections,at least in Texas.”
No Cuba 2.0
One user commented, “And the Cubans in Florida will still vote red cause they think the “communists” are gonna turn their state into Cuba 2.0″
Another reader stated, “The Vietnamese believe this, too. The right just mention communism and China and the polls are packed with dumb old people. I won’t pretend to understand the fear they went through in their lifetime, but the ignorance is insane.”
Turning Blue?
A hopeful reader said, “Maybe we will see Florida turn blue in this lifetime…”
Another user stated, “As a Texan, we need the latinos. Well, we need the ones that don’t go against their interests and buy into the GOP BS. The latin wave is why I feel hopeful about Texas eventually achieving sanity and expanding blue voting outside of the urban centers. The Rio Grande area is changing the state blue.”
Implementing Fascism
A concerned forum reader said, “Florida laws are a litmus test for implementing fascism across the country.”
Ready For Harassment?
A reader said, “Yeah, unless a federal court steps in and strikes this down Florida cops are going to be harassing every Hispanic looking person with out of state plates when this goes into effect in July.”
Lies or Promises
One reader commented, “As long as the FL GOP keeps promising their Cubans to return their plantations and cabarets back they will religiously vote for that party until either they drown under the rising sea or there’s nothing of Cuba left from decades of US imposed misery they’re so eager to inflict on their compatriots.”
Time To Reflect on Voting Choices
A forum user said, “Or you could just vote against Republicans.”
Another reader commented, “They should rethink their vote. Most are republicans”
A forum reader stated, “How about rethinking how they vote.”
An additional user stated, “I’m of the opinion that they’ve made their bed, and now they have to lie in it. But oh no, guess they don’t like it anymore? Leopards getting closer to their faces? Maybe they should’ve thought of that before banking on the fascistic ticket.”
Lack of Foresight
A frustrated reader said, “Even if you agree with Desantis/Abbott you’ve got to be asking yourself why he can’t manage to implement these things without screwing over Floridians/Texans. Their lack of foresight and strategic thinking is just incredible.”
Possible Devastating Cultural Results
One user stated, “Hispanic people have lived in Texas longer than white non-Hispanics. It would be devastating for Texas culture to lose the Hispanic influence.”
Some Are Thinking of Moving In Anyway
A reader wrote, “My wife is latina. We had seriously considered moving to either FL or TX to get out of Louisiana, and both of those states are now completely off of the list.”
Are You Welcome Here?
A reader commented, “It’s a feature, not a bug, of the current policies being implemented. Same with the current LGBTQ policies. They’re making it clear who’s welcomed and who needs to get out. All while signaling to their base.”
Lower Taxes
One user wrote, “Stop voting for the GOP. Your low taxes are not worth this craziness.”
Not Looking Back
A reader commented, “As a Latina who was born in TX and grew up in FL but left a few years ago, I will NEVER live in either state ever again until they sort their stuff out. I deeply miss my family too but they are too lost in the sauce to realize what’s going on.”
Another user stated, I’m a Latino in Florida. Currently selling a bunch of stuff and getting ready to move to the west coast. I vote progressive, regardless of party. But yea, that means I tend to vote not-Republican. Florida doesn’t feel like home anymore.
Nonsense
One user said, This is nonsense. Latinos aren’t leaving Texas. The question should be whether they continue to vote Republican next year.
Everyone Should Be Thinking
“It is not just Latinos. Women, LGBTQ+, and any other sane person in both Florida and Texas is rethinking where they are living.”
