Did your parents ever tell you something you discovered in adulthood was false? After someone recently asked Reddit, “What was something your parents told you as a kid that was never true?” Here are the top-voted little white lies.

1. It’s Illegal to Drive with the Dome Light On
Many confessed that their parents used this when the kids were distracted in the backseat with the dome light. Furthermore, they clarified it as a more straightforward way to convince children to leave the dome light off.
Others assumed it was one of those cases where half of the parents believed it, and the other half just found the lie convenient.
2. Don’t Crack Your Knuckles
One recalled their mother telling them that cracking their knuckles leads to severe arthritis and enlarged knuckles in the future. Another remembered their parents declaring they would grow hair on their knuckles if they cracked them.
3. Drinking Coffee Stunts Your Growth
Many in the thread heard drinking coffee stunts your growth as a child and hinders your natural development path.
One replied that they had drank coffee daily since the third grade and had grown to six foot three inches tall. Based on this logic, this person joked they should be towering over buildings like a Kaiju (giant monster).
4. Too Much Talking Scares the Fish Away
Once while fishing with their father and their sister, this individual recalls his father telling them to be quiet because too much noise scares all the fish off.
But, their dad was only trying to acquire peace and quiet on a fishing trip with his children. Several others in the thread admitted they were told that white lie growing up on fishing trips with dads and grandpas.
5. If You Swallow Chewing Gum, it Will Get Stuck
Someone explained how their parents told them if they swallowed chewing gum, it would end up wrapped around their hearts.
Many others shared that their parents said that if they swallowed any gum, it would accumulate in their digestive system forever.
6. You’re Hungry Because You’re Talking Too Much
One individual stated their dad told them they were always hungry because they talked too much. However, this person added they don’t speak very much now and are still always hungry.
7. Your Eyes Will Disappear if You Cry Too Much
Somebody remembered their parents telling them their eyes would disappear if they cried too much. So they joked about being a messed up adult because of it but, at the same time, declared it was okay to laugh about it now as they are older. Others disagreed.
8. Eat Too Much, and You Will Dislike That Food Later
One parent told their child that if you overeat of particular food as a child, you will hate it as an adult. Pretty much an attempt to get their child to slow down on some of the ridiculous non-healthy foods they deemed “favorites.”
9. A College Degree Will Earn You a Successful Career
Many grew up hearing that if you study hard, get good grades, and earn a reasonable degree. Then, you will be wealthy and successful. However, without a degree or even formal education, one worked as a photographer and video producer for a successful company.
Yet, they didn’t even graduate from high school. While others did all the “right things” and couldn’t find a good-paying job.
10. If You Make Funny Faces, Your Face Will Get Stuck Like That
Finally, many people shared that their parents tell them not to make funny faces at other people, or their faces will get stuck that way. Of course, we didn’t then, but we all know it isn’t true now.
