In a post on Reddit’s Entitled Parents, a man told the story of his later mother-in-law, who he called Carol, who was into all things New Age and was a** about it.
He started by telling readers his MIL’s goal was to “synthesize all religion, science, and mysticism into a unified whole. ALL of it. “ Over the years, the MIL developed a “healing library” which consisted of various lotions, potions, crystals, and the like, something which the original poster (OP) was skeptical about.
Going on the talk about Carol’s eccentric parenting and the physical and emotional abuse (including attacking them with kitchen knives and s*** shaming them) she put her kids through, Reddit readers for the picture of who she was.

Mother-In-Law Was Ashamed That Her Daughter Went Into Medicine
The OP spoke of his MIL’s shame that her daughter studied medicine rather than follow her homeopathic traditions, leading to the daughter (the OP’s wife) leaving home at 17.
The OP went on to explain that ten years ago, his wife experienced a surgical error that led to sepsis, and she asked him to call her mother.
The fact that they had been estranged and she wanted to get back in touch meant that his wife was seriously worried about her health. Carol did come to see her daughter, staying in the family home and helping out while her daughter recovered. The only mention of treatment in the early days was that Carol disagreed with the antibiotics her daughter was taking.
A Few Months Down The Line The MIL Began to Talk Chakras
A few weeks turned into a few months, and now Carol was talking about the OP stroking his wife’s hair was “blocking energy from her chakras“ and was blaming him for his wife’s nausea.
Soon Carol started to make healing oils and was getting made when the couple sought advice from doctors. Carol also became abusive to the OP and accused him of abusing his wife, at which point the OP did lose his temper.
An argument ensued in which the OP said she would only continue with the essential oil treatment if his wife wanted to. When the OP looked into what MIL had been pursuing he felt that it might have been enhancing the symptoms his wife was experiencing. Upon further investigation, he found that Carol had been using them incorrectly the whole time. After this, Carol left, and tensions were high between them all.
Wife Took A Turn For The Worse
Just after Carol left, the OP’s wife took a bad turn and ended up in ICU, and he was dreading Carol’s reaction.
Carol did start to blame the antibiotics and him stopping her from using essential oils, which he was expecting. His wife, thankfully, pulled through but is still quite ill. He put his foot down and did not want his MIL in his home to interfere with treatment.
The OP revealed that Carol died of lung cancer a few years ago after taking some medical intervention but mainly trying homemade remedies to cure herself.
Suddenly, The OP Had an Epiphany That Carol May Have Been Correct
In a plot twist, the OP said that a couple of nights after Carol died, he was driving to the “energy vortex” house, and the sat nav in the rental car suggested a different route that led him to long roads and hills through the forest and eventually head-on into a tree trunk.
As he was driving slowly, he was not hurt, but he did pause to think if there was something in Carol’s worldview after all and that the change in navigation and the bump was Carol’s last dig at getting at her son-in-law.
It is safe to say that many Reddit viewers were wide-eyed reading this story, with one reader summing it up by saying, “’ Your story is amazing, in that horrifying “I can’t believe it’s real but also totally believe it’s real” kind of way.
