The notorious “27 Club” is a cultural phenomenon – albeit a rather macabre one – in which notable people (particularly musicians) died at the age of 27.
The club presently has 69 members, and these are the ten most prominent ones.
Kurt Cobain

Arguably the most recognizable member of this tragic club is Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain. Cobain passed away in April 1994 after spending a short time in rehab.
Cobain’s death was ruled as suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot. A note was found with his body that stated his daughter would be “better off” without him in her life.

Winehouse notoriously had a long battle with class-A drugs, but perhaps somewhat more tragically, was clean when she died of alcohol poisoning in 2011.
Winehouse’s body was found at her Camden flat with two empty vodka bottles nearby.
Janis Joplin

Another young singer on the cusp of an amazing career was the powerfully-voiced Janis Joplin.
The blues singer was found dead in a hotel in October 1970. The cause of death was ruled as an accidental heroin overdose.
Jimi Hendrix

A close friend of Joplin’s was the singer and guitarist Jimi Hendrix, whose death eerily mirrored his friend’s.
Hendrix was found dead in a hotel just two months before Joplin’s. The cause of death was asphyxia from choking on his own vomit after a drug overdose.
Brian Jones

Brian Jones was the initial guitarist of The Rolling Stones before he passed away in 1969.
Jones was found motionless in his swimming pool, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The tragedy was ruled as “death by misadventure.”
Jim Morrison

The death of the enigmatic Doors frontman, Jim Morrison, has been rife with scandal and confusion.
The rock star was found dead in a bathtub in Paris. The official cause of death was listed as heart failure, but it is largely agreed that Morrison died of an accidental heroin overdose.
Kristen Pfaff

Pfaff was the original bassist of the Courtney Love-fronted grunge group Hole before her untimely death in 1994.
Pfaff died of a heroin overdose two months after losing her close friend, Kurt Cobain.
Richey Edwards

Manic Street Preachers singer Richey Edwards went missing on February 1st, 1995, with his car later being found near a bridge in Wales.
While nobody has ever been recovered, the singer is listed as “legally dead.” A conspiracy theory, however, suggests the singer faked his own death to get away from his demons.
Anton Yelchin

Terminator Salvation actor Anton Yelchin passed away in 2016 when he was accidentally crushed by his Jeep.
Yelchin believed the vehicle was in “park” as he stepped out to check his gate was locked when the car rolled backward and struck him. The death was ruled as blunt traumatic asphyxia.
Benjamin Keough

Benjamin Keough was the grandson of pop legend Elvis Presley and was on the cusp of an acting career when he died in 2020.
Keough was the son of Lisa Marie Presley and died at the age of 27 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
