Millennials see themselves as the progressive generation that’s open to different ethnicities. After all, this world is becoming increasingly smaller and more multicultural.
Millennials and GenZers also like to give Boomers the stigma of being highly racial. Yet, do Boomers see things as black and white, literally? Here is the take on the issue from online forum users. Please be aware that some topics here may be sensitive to some readers.
Boomers in the Police Force

“The oldest of the four officers involved in the George Floyd case is 44. The youngest is 26–they are all younger than the boomer generation, who are in their mid-50s at the youngest. There may be less racism (or maybe just less outspoken racism) in younger generations, but it seems there is enough to cause horrific outcomes. Also, remember that with the loss of the boomer generation will come the loss of many of the young adults during the civil rights era and who can remember how recent and ongoing the racial inequalities in the United States are.”
Millennials Are More Open

“Millennials, Gen Z, and the up-and-coming generations have moved towards acceptance of LGBTQIA+ and racial equality. The protests are mainly made up of younger people, but still have plenty of older people in them, too which is great! I believe that younger generations have brought along views that heavily conflict with the older generations.”
What About the Right-Wingers?

“Look at the growth of online groups for white supremacists, Nazis, and other alt-right people. Yes, there are probably some older people among them, but it does tend to be younger white men.”
It’s About What You Are Told

“Many of those apart of the older generations conform to the new wave and movements of acceptance and equality. But others are stuck in the mindset they were trained to have when they were young…a child’s mind is moldable, and what an authority figure trains them to believe when they’re young is likely to follow them through their life. Because that’s what they understand as normal and right, those with racist views will likely pass it on to their children, but many people of the younger generations are rejecting the racist beliefs of their elders for a multitude of reasons.”
Reaching Out With Understanding

“While I agree that social progress is largely generational, I think the issue of racism is more complicated than it is given credit for. Although some people are racists in the traditional sense, I would say that a lot of institutional racism is more complicated than simply people thinking, ‘Brown = bad.’ Part of the problem boils down to the disproportionate amount of minorities who make up lower economic classes while also considering that poverty is a leading cause of getting involved in crime. As long as those realities exist, stereotypes and negative assumptions will persist. The most impactful thing that can be done is to help at-risk kids and give people as many opportunities as possible to be raised out of poverty. If that doesn’t happen, I don’t see things improving.”
Looking Towards Equality

“I absolutely agree! Stereotypes lead to labeling, and then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Unfortunately, black people are stereotyped strongly, creating a gap in equality and opportunities. The disadvantages they are forced to suffer can be changed, but it takes effort to make an impact. I believe that by filling in those gaps, they won’t be stereotyped as much and can have a better chance of being seen as equal by everyone who doesn’t see it that way now.”
Has Racism Changed Flavor Over the Generations?

“Racism towards white people (white guilt, affirmative action, etc.) is prevalent among younger generations. Racism is still alive in Western societies; its just changed form and victims.”
Look at the Current Generation

“Older people are generally not more racist. Younger people are, they don’t realize it. Older generations have a view of equality of opportunity. Younger people want equality of outcome. To deliver equality of outcome, you must acknowledge and act on the trait you are trying to balance. Older people don’t care about your ‘protected characteristics’; they want the best people. Younger people don’t feel that’s enough, so they measure the outcome of a person’s ‘protected characteristic.’”
Who’s More Racist?

When we look at the history of colonialism, we see that it contains glaring accounts of racism. The whites promoted themselves as the more civilized race. It was in the mid-1900s that the racial movement started to gain traction. Racial equality was (and is) the motivation behind it. Boomers may be considered to be more racist than Millennials. However, alt-right groups have become a significant issue in current generations. Those who identify as LGBTQ still face complex challenges ahead of them to be granted the same rights as others.
Treating Everyone Equally

It seems that there will always be those in each generation who deny that we should all be treated as equals.
