Netflix is known (and loved) for its many incredible shows and series, but sometimes the movie side of things misses the mark.
However, when they get it right, they get it really right. These 21 Netflix original movies are well worth a screening. Get the popcorn ready….
Marriage Story (2019)
While the title may be somewhat misleading and lends itself (incorrectly) to the chick-flick genre, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story is a drama-comedy that tugs on the heartstrings.
Starring a tour de force in the shape of Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, Ray Liotta, Laura Dern, and Alan Alda, Marriage Story focuses on the not-so-happily-ever-after that sometimes comes with marriage, which is rarely focused on in cinema – and the emotional collateral damage that ricochets off of any failed relationship.
The Old Guard (2020)
Viewers need not be comic book diehards in order to enjoy this action-packed thriller starring the fabulous-as-always Charlize Theron, who leads a team of immortal soldiers hired to undergo dangerous rescue missions.
When a former CIA agent threatens to capture the crew for scientific experimental purposes, the clan of warriors doesn’t take too kindly to this plan.
The Irishman (2019)
Lovers of the OG gangster flicks such as The Godfather Trilogy, Goodfellas, and Casino will be right at home with this Martin Scorsese number.
Featuring cinematic heavyweights Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel, The Irishman may be LONG (3 hours and 29 minutes, to be precise), but it is worth every second.
Loosely based on the 2004 non-fiction book I Heard You Paint Houses, the movie looks at the story of infamous mob lawyer Jimmy Hoffa and how a regular-joe truck driver finds himself entwined in the mafia.
Tick, Tick… Boom! (2021)
Fans of musicals and biopics are in for a double treat with this Oscar-nominated flick starring Andrew Garfield as the playwright Jonathan Larsen.
The film is almost a coming-of-age number and depicts his early career movements as a young writer in New York, battling self-doubt and fierce competition, as well as the highs and lows of his personal life.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Another Oscar-nominated Netflix original is this Jane Campion-directed western, which features Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, and Jesse Plemons. It follows the trials, tribulations, and tension between two brothers, and how toxic masculinity can drive a wedge between relationships and ultimately destroy someone’s foundation and livelihood – and everything in between.
Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022)
This children’s classic tale has been reimagined through the dark and fanciful lens of Guillermo Del Toro. It follows the traditional plotline of a wooden puppet longing to become a real boy and, upon getting his wish, struggles to find his footing in Fascist Italy.
Featuring the voices of Cate Blanchett, Finn Wolfhard, and Ewan McGregor, this take on the magical tale is as dark, unique, and emotional as the rest of Del Toro’s impressive catalog.
The Gray Man (2022)
Heartthrobs Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans go head-to-head in this high-octane thriller featuring the classic cat-and-mouse chase between a CIA agent gone rogue and the bounty hunter who set out to silence him.
What unfolds is a global man-hunt that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
Extraction (2020)
Speaking of heartthrobs, Extraction sees Marvel hunk Chris Hemsworth take on the more gritty, no-nonsense role of a black market mercenary who is assigned to track down a crime lord’s son.
What starts out as a routine “job” for Hemsworth’s gravelly nothing-left-to-lose character quickly unravels into a dark and dangerous journey through the criminal underworld.
What Happened to Monday? (2017)
Fans of dystopian cinema will need to buckle up for this futuristic thriller that follows Noomi Rapace, Willem Defoe, and Glenn Close as they embark on a missing child search during a turbulent era that features a government-led “one-child-only” policy in a bid to prevent overpopulation – and the brutal consequences of breaking this law.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)
Lovers of a good old-fashioned whodunnit will relish this all-star mystery installment featuring Daniel Craig, Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Hugh Grant, and Natasha Lyonne.
The movie takes place on a plush Greek island, and when a man dies under mysterious circumstances, Craig’s character Detective Blanc is tasked with solving the case.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020)
This music-driven biopic stars Viola Davis and the late, great Chadwick Boseman, as the former undergoes a frustrating recording session with her band and the tension that begins to rise among the crew.
Based on a true story surrounding the blues legend’s infamous studio session that took place in Chicago in 1927. We see the fiery trailblazing singer engage in a battle of wits with her manager.
The Two Popes (2019)
The Two Popes stars movie veterans Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce as Pope Benedict and the future Pope Francis respectively, who unite to face their history and find some common ground in order to pave a new way for the Catholic church, which then blossoms into a touching friendship between the pair.
Gerald’s Game (2017)
Stephen King fans have been eagerly awaiting a movie adaptation of the master of horror’s 1992 novel of the same name.
The unthinkable happens when a husband and wife’s erotic foreplay goes horribly wrong and the woman finds herself trapped in a compromising – and terrifying – situation. You will be holding your breath the whole way through this tense psychological thriller!
Tramps (2016)
Those who prefer their movies a little less gut-wrenching will enjoy this tale of criminal heist-meets-blossoming romance.
A chalk ‘n’ cheese young man and woman find themselves drawn to each other when faced with an unusual situation that thrusts them together in this mistaken identity caper.
I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore (2017)
In another case of ‘opposites attract’, Melanie Lynskey stars as a lonely, downtrodden woman who teams up with her obnoxious neighbor (Elijah Wood) after she is burglarized and left to feel unsafe and fobbed off by the cops. The pair take it upon themselves to solve this crime and end up biting off more than they can chew when they come up against a pack of unhinged criminals.
Roma (2018)
Set in the 1970s, this semi-autobiographical story follows the life of a Mexican housekeeper, Cleo, as she bonds with the family she works for after it begins to unravel and heads on a vacation to try and regroup and revive the love between the family.
Bird Box (2018)
This tense post-apocalyptic horror stars Sandra Bullock as Malorie as she embarks on a dangerous – and completely blindfolded – journey to safety with two children. The reason for the blindfolds? This new world features monsters that take on a person’s worst fear if seen – with fatal consequences. Lovers of A Quiet Place will be right at home with this edge-of-your-seat flick.
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
A story of how wearing your heart on your sleeve can hideously backfire, this romantic coming-of-age drama follows a girl named Lara, who writes love letters to all the boys at her high school that she has crushes on – but doesn’t mail them – and when her younger sister discovers them and does mail them, her life as she knows it descends into red-faced chaos!
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
A big Oscar contender, this Coen Bros (Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou?) western follows six different storylines that are all centered around one man – Buster Scruggs (Tim Blake Nelson) – and the fables and follies that go hand-in-hand with all old west shenanigans. The stellar cast also includes Liam Neeson, Tom Waits, and Zoe Kazan.
I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
When it comes to Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) movies,
you know you’re in for a surreal but wild ride.
This mind-bending, artsy, identity-confusing thriller will have you questioning every second, and there’s barely a moment between one head-scratching scene and another. With a cast including Jessie Buckley, Jesse Plemons, Toni Collette, and David Thewlis, this movie is a rollercoaster of surrealism.
Mank (2020)
A movie for movie-buffs. Mank is a David Fincher delivered drama that follows the developments of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewitz as he crafts his cinematic masterpiece, Citizen Kane.
Described as a “scathing, witty alcoholic”, Mankiewitz’s script journey is a race against time to complete the final draft of the movie that would change the face of cinema forever.
