In a classic example of how childish tit for tat disputes in politics can spill over and affect real lives and the economy, 2,000 jobs were lost in Florida thanks to presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis thinking he could play hard ball.
What Has Desantis Been up to Recently?
Apart from pulling all the funding for diversity and inclusion programs in state universities so as not to get “distracted with niche subjects”, DeSantis has also been busy passing laws that forbid schools from mentioning anything to do with gay people or gender identity, which is now strictly banned in Florida.
Teacher Under Investigation for Playing Disney Film in Class
The rules are so strict that a teacher is now under serious investigation because in her school they played an animated Disney film that included a gay character on screen for around 2 minutes.
Under new laws enacted by DeSantis this is strictly forbidden and the results of the investigation are still pending.
You Have the Right To Free Speech but Only if It Agrees With Everything I Say
The amusing and slightly hypocritical thing with these situations is that commentators of a certain persuasion are always banging on about free speech this and that, usually when they want to continue to use language that is deemed to be offensive.
Not on That Subject Though
Does the right to free speech only exist if it doesn’t involve any ideas that conflict with theirs or are different in any way? And certainly no gay talk please because that is now outlawed so of course you don’t have free speech to cover that topic.
Looks a Bit Like a Medieval Town Anyway…
Disney had a bit of a problem with these laws, maybe because it sounded slightly like a return to the medieval days, and exercising their right to free speech they voiced their concern over the new laws.
Disney Exercises Right To Free Speech – Desantis Tries To Punish
Of course Republican Governor DeSantis decided that for disagreeing with his brilliant plans, Disney should be punished – a bit like in Russia or North Korea where you are not allowed to disagree with the state for fear of penalty.
Why Trying To Punish Disney Was a Bad Idea
Taking offence at Disney for disagreeing with the new laws and trying to punish them financially was a terrible move from DeSantis, but why exactly was it such a poor tactic?
For a start, Disney brings in $1.15 billion in taxes every year for the state of Florida. They employ 75,000 people, the 2nd biggest employer in Florida and bring in a total $75.2 billion to the state in overall economic benefit.
How Did Desantis Retaliate When Disney Disagreed With New Laws?
Upon hearing that Disney had a problem with the new laws banning discussions about gender identity and homosexuality, DeSantis tore up an agreement more than 50 years old that allowed Disney to almost have its own little country around Disneyland, with less regulations for development allowing it to expand and build without the usual restrictions.
This agreement probably had something to do with the $75 billion Disney was bringing in per year and wanting to keep them on-side.
“Woke Company Doesn’t Deserve Rights”
DeSantis declared that a “woke company does not deserve such rights” and promptly tried to rip up the agreement, although is now facing an ongoing battle in court with the legal case brought forward by Disney.
$867 Million Out the Window – Good Work Desantis
With the adversarial attitude they received, Disney was left asking, “Do you still want our investment and jobs in this state?”
DeSantis wanted to continue scoring political points however, proving that he was right and continued to play hard ball. Disney has now cancelled the $867 million planned development in Florida, with the eagerly anticipated 2,000 jobs going back to California. Well done DeSantis, you should probably run for president with political flair such as that.
