Governor Ron DeSantis(R) from Florida signed a bill Wednesday, May 17th, that endangers families with minors who receive gender-affirming care. The bill allows them to be taken by the state if it is believed the minor has been “subjected to or (are) threatened with being subjected to” gender-affirming care. Many Republicans across the country have started implementing and introducing bills that target this type of treatment, but the bill signed on Wednesday is the most extreme version being implemented. Republicans feel they protect children from being subjected to these treatments by ripping them away from their families.
Parents Still Know Best
One reader wrote, “Reminder that this is the same a**hole who said that parents know best when it comes to masking their children. EDIT: getting a lot of transphobes replying to me with misinformation. No, it’s not mutilation or castration. Stop getting your sources from conservative media outlets.”
Avoid Florida
A user commented, “I believe this bill also has a clause where it supercedes any other state’s custody arrangements. Soooo, don’t let your ex take y’all’s kid to FL for a vacation. Don’t let your kids go on trips to FL for any reason or with any group.”
Another reader stated, “I just posted another comment about this but my family is cancelling vacation plans to Florida next year because of this bill (and others). Taking our money to California instead. No one in our family is trans but we can’t in good conscience take our money to that state.”
Movin’ Out
A reader wrote, “My girlfriend works in HR for an aerospace company that has operations in FL. Probably about a quarter of her current work is meeting with people who want to get out of that state and take a job with the company at a location out of state.”
Forced To Conform
Someone commented, “Florida and DeSantis are using children to force the state’s citizens to conform to other people’s religious ideology. It is completely unconstitutional, and if the current Supreme Court rules that what Florida is doing is A-Ok with them, we will be in a defacto theocracy.”
Infringing on Personal Rights
A reader said, “This is the mentality that really concerns me. I know people who are still planning on going to Florida for vacations despite having LGBTQ friends and children. I know people whose retired parents keep trying to get their trans son to visit them. They think that none of these policies will be enforced, that they are too crazy to be enforced, and it’s all political theatre. That it won’t hurt THEIR family because they aren’t doing anything “wrong.” Similar things are happening with the new abortion bans. People are going to get hurt, families are going to be torn apart, and people are just sitting back and taking it because they can’t imagine people would be so stupid and cruel without reason.”
Putting People In Harm’s Way
A reader said, “By passing legislation that describes LGBTQ health care as something that should be penalized, Florida lawmakers are putting people of all ages at risk of real harm, writes Tori Otten.”
Truly Scary
One person said, “That is truly scary. So, being a loving parents, supporting their children as who they are can lead to them losing their children?”
Moves for Hate
I’m amazed how quickly governments can move for hate, but doing anything beneficial for society takes years, decades to ‘study’ the issue before forgetting about it.
Concern For Future Trends
A concerned reader stated, ‘Now, long before this Law is expanded to include the kids of same-sex parents? Kids of Undocumented Parents? These types of laws tend to snowball by design.’
Emotional Damage
A user commented, “Because gender-affirming care is much more emotionally damaging than denying them care and ripping them from their families.”
Rotting
An upset reader said, “America is well and truly rotting from the inside out.”
What About The Kids?
One user said, “And where will they put the kids? In foster care with strangers who won’t let them live how they wish? In some institution?”
Another reader stated, “Taking a vulnerable youth away from someone who cares about them to put them with a ward of the state who doesn’t. How is this care!?”
Imaginary Dictator
An upset reader wrote, “Ronald DeSillyhead thinks he’s a dictator. This law is illegal and he’s going to pay an extremely high price for signing it. His religious extremism will not stand. It could take decades to undo all the damage he’s doing to Florida.”
Attacking Americans
One reader commented, “This policy is worse than Trump’s separating kids from their parents at the border. He is attacking Americans… How can this be OK.”
Speak Up!
A user wrote, “Trans kids today. Your kid tomorrow. FL residents need to speak up!”
Force or Choice
A confused reader wrote, “Are subjected to or are threatened with being subjected to” gender affirming care?” So…who are these parents who are forcing their children to be trans? I’ve never heard of a single instance of this happening.”
Standing Your Ground
This reader commented, “If there were ever a justification for “Stand Your Ground” laws, I’d say this is it. Come for my kids I shoot.”
Another reader said, “My response would be “ let ‘em try to remove my kid”.
Fear In Florida
A reader replied, “And he wants to be our next president! Be scared be very very scared!”
