Everyone has the occasional bad day at work, but when the same scenario happens repeatedly, a job can become the epitome of dreadful.
Recently an employee, whom we’ll call “Emery,” thought of a genius solution to their terrible work-related issue. Here’s their story.
Repeated Offense
In the recent past, Emery worked at a sandwich shop, putting orders together for customers. On occasion, a customer would complain about finding hair in their food.
Whenever this occurred, Emery’s boss would always blame them. Now Emery reveals that they always kept their hair pulled up and used a hair net to keep it from falling into the food they were preparing.
Problem Solver
Emery couldn’t handle getting blamed repeatedly for customers finding hair in their food. Emery discloses that they have brown hair, and the Indian women they work with have long, black hair.
Recently, after catching heat, once again, for a customer’s complaint of long, black hair in their food, Emery had a brilliant solution.
They dyed their dark hair blue. This solution resulted in an almost overnight stop to complaints that Emery had gotten food in a customer’s order. With bright blue hair, there was no way Emery’s boss could blame them for the black hair that landed in a food order.
Being blamed for something that isn’t your fault is awful, but being constantly blamed without factual proof is crazy. The internet thought so too.
Not Alone
Emery wasn’t alone, as one commenter shared their dye job. “I called my bright pink hair my ‘food safety hair.'”
Natural Shade
Another person didn’t care that their hair wasn’t all-natural. “Great way of getting around strict dress codes at work! Yeah, my hair isn’t a natural shade, but we aren’t allowed natural shade Band-Aids are we, Mr. Boss Man?”
No, Sir
A second contributor also ran into this exact situation. “Yup, I got blamed for this. I had short brown hair. I worked with guys who had long hair.
So I dyed mine red. Nope, chef. Mine hair’s red.”
Same Initials
One employee shared their own “bad boss” moment. “I got in trouble with my boss for signing initials for something that, when completed, was done so wrong. She refused to believe that it could maybe have been her daughter, who has identical initials and always signs lowercase while I sign uppercase. Don’t miss that job.”
Toxicity
Some else described the perfect storm for a tired employee. “Not only that but the cattiness and toxicity resemble that of high school mean girls/popular kid groups. Many places can be like a hornets’ nest if the manager(s) is/are towards their employees. It’s a breeding ground for mean and jaded employees.”
Not Cool
Another participant shared a miserable manager situation. “
My manager is a dude in his late 20s, and most people in the store are teens. For whatever reason, he seems determined to impress all the teenagers by being the cool manager, and it has led to the store feeling like a high school, and because I don’t play those games, I’ve ended up in the out-group.
It’s pretty miserable, to be honest; nobody can trust anybody else because they’ll rat you out to get brownie points with the cool manager.”
Automation Anyone
One individual thinks robots are taking over the wrong jobs. “Honestly, it’s management we should be automating.
No one wants to be a 45-year-old fast food/retail manager when they grow up. The people who have those jobs have them because they made poor choices and then made the best of what they got. Some are good people, some are horrible, but they’re almost all bitter and miserable.
But the worker bees, the servers and fry cooks and tellers and dishwashers and stockers and cashiers, they’re usually people who want a simple job that ends when it ends, part-time and not too stressful so they can go to school or pass the time in retirement or make some money over the summer or whatever.
We’re automating the wrong jobs. We should be replacing the managers with robots, not the cashiers!”
Waiting
According to one forum poster, Ryan Reynolds might know a thing or two about Emery’s situation. “Ryan Reynolds did a super accurate documentary about the food service industry earlier in his career, covering much of this.
It’s called “Waiting.”
Are You Serious
Another interested party couldn’t believe the cook’s hype. “Yup. I had a blue mohawk at the restaurant I waited tables at. I got blamed for the long black hair in a customer’s food by the cook with the long black hair. All I could say was, “You serious?”
What Hair
One food service worker shared their solution to a similar situation. “My head is bald, and a customer approached me with their food and showed me long brown hair. My cooks had shaved heads and were wearing hats. His wife had long brown hair. I gave him another slice of pizza anyway because clearly, he’s having some trouble.”
Taking Sides
Someone shared that, on occasion, you can find a manager who sides with their workers. “Yeah. Thankfully sometimes higher-ups aren’t dense. Had a situation where they sided with their workers:
The customer comes complaining about hair in her food. The supervisor laughs and has the kitchen staff come out. Tells customer none of them have hair this long, but it matches with the length of the hair of the person complaining. I told her not to complain to get something for nothing.”
Free Food
One former server watched a woman get owned when she tried to get her food comped. “I saw a similar situation; a lady wanted free lunch, so she said there was hair in her food. The manager made a big show of calling all the staff out; they were all bald!”
Body Hair
Another food worker relayed this story, “I once had a lady tell me, ‘that man over there rubbed his armpit on my fries and put hair on them!’ While working fast food, I told her, ‘That did not happen; I’ve been standing near him for 2 hours!’ And she called my GM the next day, who laughed at her.”
Laughing
One user found the above comment far too funny. “I’m ugly laughing on that one. Thank you.”
As one person shared, it is vital to get your facts straight.
“I had a guy call our Taco Bell. ‘You messed up my drive-through order! I want a replacement!’
‘Are you sure it was this store, sir?’
‘Of COURSE, I’m sure!’
‘Uh-huh. We don’t have a drive-through.’ Click.”
Honesty is the Best Policy
No one wants to find hair in their food; when it happens, it’s disgusting and disheartening. Conversely, complaining about a food service violation that isn’t true can be detrimental to someone’s employment and even to the survival of the restaurant, cafe, etc.
In these situations, honesty is the best policy, but unfortunately, that isn’t as easy to obtain as it was a few years back.
