A man bought his two siblings out of their share of the family home when their mother passed away. Now he’s sold the house for three times the amount he paid for it, and his siblings are demanding a cut.
His mum died in 2018
In 2018, his mum passed away, leaving him and his siblings a decent amount of money and her house. Both of his siblings wanted to sell the house and split the money, but he wanted to make it his home.
His siblings happily sold him their share of the house
His siblings were happy about him offering to buy them out of their share of the house and excited about the extra money they’d receive from him. They got the house appraised, hired an attorney, and went through with it.
He paid his siblings their money
He paid his siblings for their shares of the house using his own potion of inheritance money and also a chunk of his savings. Then he moved into the house with his fiance. The couple saved a bunch of money on rent and were really happy living in the house.
His brother spent all his money on luxuries
His brother burned through his money in two years. Fancying himself a bit of an ‘influencer,’ he bought a Maserati, went to expensive nightclubs, and vacationed in exotic places. He had no issue with his brother spending the money how he wished, but the money, of course, ran out.
His sister bought a boat
His sister and her husband spent her inheritance money on a really expensive boat. They used the boat pretty often, and his nephews absolutely loved it. But as far as he understands, her portion of the money also ran out.
The value of the house tripled
He got married and had a son. Over time, there had been an influx of people to the city, so prices had shot up. During the holidays, he would host his siblings at the house and noticed they kept making snide comments about how much more the home was worth than when they had sold their shares. He already knew this, as he’d received a bunk of cash offers, which he refused.
He and his wife decided to relocate
However, this year, he decided it was time to sell the house. He and his wife were expecting another child, and they wanted to relocate to be nearer her family. His boss agreed to the move and made arrangements for him to relocate to another office.
He put the house up for sale
He put the house up for sale, and it sold pretty quickly. That’s when the trouble started. Both of his siblings felt he owed it to them to split the profit he made on the house because ‘it’s only fair.’ He was busy moving out and looking for a new place, so he didn’t have time to deal with it at the time.
The siblings accused him of being selfish
Months later, his siblings insist he’s cheated them out of a portion of their inheritance and is being selfish. They claim they did him a favor by making the process of him buying the house smooth by not kicking up a fuss. They argue it is still their house too.
The whole family got involved
The whole situation became toxic, and the rest of the family got involved. Luckily, most of the family was on his side. However, his mom’s sister has said it would have broken his mum’s heart to see her kids fighting and that he should split the money. Similarly, his dad’s sister has said he should buy them off to shut them up.
He turned to the internet for advice
He’s sure that the house became his when he used his inheritance and savings to buy it, making the profit also his. Wanting reassurance, though, he turned to an online forum to get other people’s views on whether he was in the wrong for refusing to split the money with his siblings.
The internet responded
One reader said, “The fact that they didn’t understand that you can either invest or spend an inheritance is not your problem. They chose to spend their inheritance while you chose to invest yours. Now that they’ve thrown theirs away, it’s on them.”
Another commentator said, “If they had sold it to a third party, would they get the sales proceeds too? Same thing, just a different person. You maintained the house, paid the expenses, etc., and if they can’t comprehend that, then they are fools. Ignore and move on.”
