A couple of years ago, a young man worked with a placement agency that found him a great job at a fence factory.
He Was Young
He was only 19 years old, but he loved the job because it was only 15 minutes from his home, he had three days off a week, and he was making $22 per hour.
The Contract
The agency had a contract with the company that after three months, the company was obligated to hire him. The factory was very loud, and the forklift drivers always had earphones on.
Dangerous
The young man had never seen anyone wearing safety goggles, and there were many safety issues. However, he went to work every day, was never late, and even put his name down for some overtime on Saturdays.
Good Feedback
He received good feedback from his colleagues, who said that he was a fast learner and had potential. One day, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) came in for a surprise visit.
Bad Boss
The entrance in the front was locked, so the boss had time to tell everyone to put on their safety glasses and earplugs before opening the door for the inspectors. OSHA did their inspection and left, satisfied with what they had seen. As soon as the door closed, everyone took off their glasses.
The Unjust Firing
On the 30th day of his employment, the young man’s boss called him into his office and informed him that it was his last day. He didn’t give any reason why but said that he was a good employee.
He Didn’t Like Him
The young man had the feeling that his boss didn’t like him personally, and the agency also called him later, saying that he would no longer work there and asking if he knew why.
He Called Them!
Feeling angry and betrayed, the young man decided to be petty. He called OSHA and told them about how unsafe the factory was and how the company put on a show when the inspectors were there.
Secret Entrance
He told the person on the phone that if the inspector went to the employees’ parking lot, there was a door that went directly into the factory, and that door was unlocked. The OSHA representative thanked him, and that was it.
Two Weeks Later
Two or three weeks later, the young man had to drive by the factory, and he noticed that there were no cars in the parking lot, and the windows in the front office were boarded up. He couldn’t believe that it had worked so quickly.
Abandoned
It had been roughly seven years since then, and the place looked like it had been abandoned for years. The young man had mixed feelings about what had happened.
Differing Sides
On the one hand, he was glad that the unsafe factory had been shut down, and he had played a role in it. On the other hand, he was still angry about being fired without any explanation.
Not Worth It
Looking back, the young man realized that the job wasn’t worth it, given the safety issues and the way he was treated. He had learned a valuable lesson about standing up for himself and not putting up with unfair treatment.
He Moved On
The young man moved on to other jobs, and he eventually found a great position with a company that valued him and treated him well. He learned that sometimes, things happen for a reason, and that there’s always a better opportunity waiting around the corner.
Grateful
In the end, the young man was grateful for the experience, even though it was a difficult one. He had learned to trust his instincts, stand up for himself, and never settle for less than he deserved.
The Internet Responded
One commenter said, “Honestly, you probably saved lives. I worked at a factory for a while where they did insist on the use of eye protection, ear protection, burn sleeves, and steel toe boots. They had all kinds of mirrors and required forklifts to stop at all intersections. Even with so many precautions in place, there were still accidents and occasionally even deaths that still occurred.”
Further Comments
This person commented, “I can’t imagine what the body count must have been at the one you worked at where they just blatantly didn’t care about safety.”
This person had a different opinion, “Well, you certainly got revenge but I feel sorry for everyone else who lost their jobs.”
