After a family dinner ended in a heated argument between siblings, Rachel tried to make amends with her sister Emily and bring the family together.
A Nice Family Dinner
The family dinner was supposed to be a night of fun and laughter, but it quickly turned into a heated argument between siblings. The family of four, consisting of the eldest sister, Emily (29), younger sister, Rachel (24), and the youngest brother, Adam (22), had invited their extended family to the dinner. The event was supposed to be a celebration of their togetherness, but it quickly turned sour.
Things Got Heated
The family was joined by their cousins, aunts, uncles, and significant others. The dinner was going well until Emily and Adam got into a disagreement. Rachel noticed that Emily was getting aggressive and frustrated, and the argument was getting out of hand. The two siblings were too absorbed in their argument to realize that the rest of the family was getting fed up.
She Lost It
Emily finally lost her patience and said, “Shut up, I’m not going to argue with a 22-year-old virgin.” Adam had not made any personal attacks up until that point, and the comment was completely unprovoked. Rachel suspected that the alcohol had gotten to Emily, and she was acting like a mean drunk.
She Was Told to Grow Up
Rachel immediately told Emily to grow up and that she was making an embarrassment of herself. Emily replied by saying that everyone knows Adam is a virgin, and she didn’t say anything wrong. This angered Rachel as she knew that Adam had confidence issues and didn’t need to be made fun of like this.
She Was Accused
Rachel responded by saying, “How about you, Emily? You slept with well over a hundred men while you were in college. Since everyone in the family knows this, it’s not a big deal, right?” To Rachel’s surprise, Emily’s husband, Mark, didn’t know about her past, and he left the party angrily, feeling that Emily had misled him.
The Family Blamed Her
The family blamed Rachel for their marital problems, but she refused to accept that she had done anything wrong. Rachel believed that Emily had bullied Adam in front of everyone, and all she did was give her a taste of her own medicine.
She Felt Guilty
The family dinner ended on a sour note, with everyone leaving in a bad mood. Rachel felt guilty for what had happened and knew that she had to make things right. The next day, she called Mark and apologized for what had happened. She explained that she didn’t mean to cause any trouble and that she was just trying to defend her brother.
He Was Upset
Mark was still upset but appreciated Rachel’s apology. He told her that he needed some time to think things over and that he would talk to Emily about it. Rachel felt relieved that she had taken the first step towards fixing things.
She Was Hesitant
A few days later, Emily called Rachel and asked to meet up. Rachel was hesitant at first, but she agreed to meet her sister. Emily apologized for what had happened at the family dinner and admitted that she was wrong. She said that she was going through a tough time and that she didn’t mean to take her frustration out on Adam.
She Forgave
Rachel forgave Emily and they hugged it out. The two sisters talked for hours, catching up on old times and reminiscing about their childhood. Rachel realized that family was more important than anything else and that she would do anything to keep them together.
Straight to the Internet
In the end, the family was able to put their differences aside and come together. They realized that they were all flawed and that they needed to work on their relationships. The family dinner that had started off on a sour note ended up bringing them closer together. They promised to make an effort to stay in touch and to support each other through thick and thin. However, with this in mind Rachel decided she would reach out to a popular internet forum for advice from an outside perspective to see what they thought on her situation.
The Internet Responds
One person comments, “One person making personal attacks doesn’t mean someone else should- especially since you weren’t even in the argument to begin with.”
A Further Response
Another person writes, “I think it is going to be really hard to defuse the argument if she didn’t see anything wrong with what she said. Depends on how other family members were reacting, but if OP was the only one willing to step in and his younger brother (presumably) backed down quickly as he has confidence issues, I don’t see many ways to diffuse to argument besides just leaving. But that would just be putting the argument on pause, not really resolving it.”
