Vacuum the carpet first

For your baking soda cleansing methods to be more effective, you want to remove as much dirt and debris from the carpet before starting.
The best way is to give the carpet a thorough vacuuming. Use the highest setting of your vacuum as practical for the carpet.
That allows for any dirt that is residing deep within the fibers to be sucked up. Now the baking soda has the chance to work its way unhindered to the base of the carpet.
1. Dealing with non-greasy stains
Non-greasy stains are created by coffee, tea, juice, and ink. If your carpet is splotched with these stains, here is how to use baking soda to treat them.
- Fill a spray bottle with warm water.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the stain.
- Spray the baking soda with a light layer of water (enough to dampen the spot). Let everything rest for 3-4 hours.
- Vacuum up the baking soda.

2. Grease stains
These are more stubborn to remove from your carpet. The best way to deal with these is to get on top of them as soon as they occur.
That way, you are minimizing the chance they have of soaking the fibers. However, if you spot a grease stain that seems to have been lurking on your carpet for a while, you can still remove it.
- Blot up as much of the grease as you can with a paper towel or cloth.
- Cover the stain with a generous amount of baking soda.
- Get a brush and carefully work the baking soda into the carpet.
- Leave the baking soda for at least eight hours.
- Vacuum the area.
If the stain refuses to leave, you can use dish soap.
- Add several drops of dish soap to the stained area.
- Spray the stain with water so that it is damp.
- Use a brush and gently scrub over the spot.
- Blot up the soapy water using a paper towel or cloth.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the stain and leave it for at least 3 hours.
- Vacuum up the baking soda.
3. Combine baking soda with a carpet cleaner
If you love to use a carpet cleaner, you can give it a little bit of a boost with baking soda. It pays to go slowly and section off the area in the room.
Work on one-meter square sections and move from the farthest spot in the room towards the doorway.
- Cover the area with a generous amount of baking soda.
- Use your carpet cleaner to work the baking soda into the fibers of the carpet.
- Move to the next section and repeat until you have done the entire room.
- Wait for around three hours and then give the room a good vacuum.
If you want to you can give the room one more going over with your carpet cleaner before vacuuming. You will have to wait for the carpet to dry out first (if you are using a steam cleaner or something similar that uses water).

These are like the power twins for cleaning. It’s possible to use them on the carpet but do a small test patch first.
To rid your carpet of stains, here is what to do:
- Pour a little bit of vinegar on the stain and then dust the area with baking soda.
- Allow the soda to fizz up and then leave it for 15 minutes.
- Gently blot the spot to remove any excess moisture from the carpet. Be careful not to push too hard as this will force the baking soda to penetrate deeper into the carpet and pile.
- Vacuum the area.
5. Removing odors from the carpet
Spilled food and drink, your pets rolling on the carpet, unclean shoes. These can all contribute to your carpet smelling a bit unpleasant.
Luckily you have baking soda on your side.
To rid your carpet from unwanted stenches, here is what to do:
- Sprinkle a healthy amount of baking soda over the carpet.
- Leave it for a couple of hours to work its odor-removing magic on your carpet.
- Vacuum up the baking soda.
If you enjoy fragrances wafting around your home, you can combine essential oils with baking soda. This will have your carpet looking and smelling wonderful.
- Take a bowl or container and pour in some warm water.
- Add in your baking soda and several drops of your favorite essential oil.
- Mix together to make a paste.
- Apply the paste to those areas on the carpet that needs the most deodorizing.
- Wait for 24 hours before vacuuming out the room.
Will the baking soda ruin my carpet?
Baking soda is safe and won’t do any harm to the carpet. If it works its way to the pile, there can be potential damage.
However, your pets and family will be safe if there are specks of baking soda still within your carpet. What can we say?
Baking soda is so tiny that it can be very tricky to remove all of it.

Can baking soda damage my vacuum cleaner?
Because of the tiny particles that baking soda consists of, the filters could become blocked. Also, the motor will have to work overtime due to the clogged filters.
The result is that your vacuum cleaner is ruined.
To minimize the chance of that happening, wash the filters and clean out the other parts every time you have vacuumed up the baking soda.
Conclusion
Carpets get a lot of use, especially in busy households. Baking soda is a natural and safe way to clean your carpet.
Now you have several ways in which to keep your carpet looking clean.
It’s now up to you to decide which method to try.
