How To Get Turmeric Stains Out Of Nails

Turmeric is a popular spice for curries and other savory dishes. The yellowing from this spice can add a colorful touch to any dish. 

That kind of color may look good for your culinary flare, but it can make your nails look less than appealing. Fortunately, there are several ways you can untint your nails. 

Tumeric can leave a nasty stain on your fingers which can be hard to get rid of. To remove tumeric from your nails you can use lemon juice, baking soda, vinegar, even a magic eraser (on gel nails), or a combination of several ingredients.

You may look at your lovely nails and lament the fact that they have a yellowish hue thanks to tumeric. 

Here are 7 tips you can try to restore your nails. 

1. Vinegar and sugar

Sugar is one way to clean up spilled nail polish, so why not use it to remove tumeric from your nails? Combine it with white vinegar and you have one way to tidy up your nails. 

Here is what to do:

  1. In a bowl mix a tablespoon of sugar with a cup of vinegar.
  2. Stir the ingredients together to make a scrub,
  3. Apply the scrub to your fingernails, rubbing gently to remove the stain.

You will find that it will take several applications of this scrub to completely clean your nails.

2. Lemon with baking soda

Both lemon juice and baking soda contain natural bleaching agents. That makes them ideal for removing stains off anything, including nails. 

Like the first method, you want to make a scrub. Follow these steps:

  1. Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a bowl.
  2. Slowly add in the baking soda, stirring it into the lemon juice. You want a nice thin paste that you can use as a scrub. 
  3. Place the solution over your fingernails and then scrub with a nail brush or toothbrush.
  4. Rinse off the scrub from your hands.

You will have to repeat the above steps once more to fully restore the glory of your nails.

3. Bleach with lemon juice

This is similar to the previous method. You are substituting the baking soda with bleach

  1. Combine juice from half a lemon, water, and bleach in a bowl. Read the instructions for the bleach to determine the appropriate level of water to bleach. 
  2. Mix the ingredients well. 
  3. Soak your fingernails in the solution for several minutes.
  4. Rinse your fingers with soap and water.

4. Use a hand sanitizer 

The main ingredient that makes hand sanitizers powerful cleansers is the alcohol they contain. Use this to your advantage for removing tumeric off your nails. 

  1. Apply a small amount of hand sanitizer to your nails. Give your nails a good rub
  2. Use some tissue paper or a cotton ball to remove the sanitizer.
  3. Check to see if the Tumeric stain has gone. 

Repeat the process if the stains are still there. It can take two to three applications of the sanitizer to do the trick.

5. Use a magic eraser

Magic erasers are usually considered a universal household cleaner, buffing anything from countertops to faucets. Yet, you can use magic erasers to rid your nails of that horrible yellow stain. 

This is what to do:

  1. Dampen your magic eraser as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Wipe over your nails with the magic eraser and watch the stains fade away. 

Though this method has been proven to be effective with gel nails, you can try it on natural nails.

6. Dish soap 

Dish soap is created to break down the chemical structure of food stains, so it makes sense to try it as a way to restore the whiteness of your nails. 

  1. Fill a small bowl with water and add in a couple of squirts of dish soap.
  2. Place your hands into the bowl and let them soak for several minutes. 
  3. Rinse off the soap and dry your hands. 

The tumeric stain should be gone. You may have to do this method several times before the stains are fully removed.

7. Nail polish remover

Nail polish remover contains acetone, which is the leading property that allows it to remove the colorful polish from your nails. 

You can take advantage of the acetone to eliminate the yellow tinge on your nails. The method is similar to that of using hand sanitizer:

  1. Dab a cloth or cotton ball with some of the nail polish remover. 
  2. Rub the cloth/cotton ball over your nails. Take your time as you want to be thorough.
  3. Wash your hands with soap and water when done.

Protecting your nails

We have given you some options designed to remove the tumeric stains from your fingers. However, you may find that getting rid of the stain is a little harder than you first thought. 

Combine the stain removal suggestions we have provided you with a couple of days’ patience. Then you will find that the yellow discoloration of your nails has disappeared. 

There are a couple of ways you can prevent the staining from occurring in the first place.

Wear gloves

This is the most obvious solution. Chuck on a pair of disposable gloves whenever you are working with tumeric. 

You want to ensure that your fingernails won’t cause the gloves to rip or tear. That will undermine the whole purpose of wearing the gloves.

Create a barrier 

If you want to work with your bare hands, then consider protecting your nails from staining by using a nail base coat

Base coats form a barrier between the nail and the nail polish. It is one method used by experts to stop fingernails from staining. 

Apply a couple of layers of the base coat to your nails. After you have had your fun with the tumeric use a nail polish remover to get rid of the stains.
