There’s always a few uncomfortable aspects to air travel. The lack of leg room, the stuffy cabins, the small seats, people breathing down your neck… this list is endless. These few points are why a lot of people choose to upgrade to First Class.
Luxury First
But what do you do when you’ve paid fair and square for your luxury seat and someone approaches you demanding that you move? That’s exactly what happened to one airline pilot travelling First Class.
The Beginning of the Issue
As a pilot, you would think that airline travel would be a breeze. But for one airline captain, commuting to work proved to be anything but easy. Living in Atlanta but domiciled in Houston, the captain purchased a full fare First Class ticket to ensure he could get to work. But on this particular day, things didn’t go as planned.
No Other Choice
The captain arrived at the gate, ready to board his flight, only to find that the jump seat in the cockpit was already taken. Pass riding wasn’t an option either, as there were no seats in coach and only one in First. So, the captain did what any reasonable person would do – he purchased the last seat in First.
The Wrong Seat?
As boarding commenced, the captain took his seat and waited for pushback. But before he knew it, an entitled passenger appeared, demanding that he move from her seat. The captain, confused, checked his boarding pass to confirm that he was in the right seat. And he was.
The Upgrade
The entitled passenger, however, was not happy with this response. She insisted that the captain was an employee and therefore should not be sitting in First Class.
“I upgraded to First Class, now move.” The entitled woman fumed.
No Employees Allowed
The captain politely suggested that she take the matter up with the flight crew, but the entitled passenger was having none of it.
“You’re an employee. You’re sitting in my seat. Move now.” The entitled woman continued to insist this was, in fact, her seat due to an upgrade.
The Case of the Imaginary Upgrade
She stomped off, returning with a flight attendant, demanding that the captain be removed from her seat. The flight attendant, however, confirmed that the captain had paid for the seat and was entitled to sit there.
Questions, Questions, Questions
“Ma’am, How did you upgrade your ticket?” The flight attendant questioned.
But the entitled passenger avoided the question and just kept insisting, “I upgraded to First Class. I’m more important than an employee. Now get him out of my seat!”
An Unsatisfied Customer
The entitled passenger was not satisfied with this and demanded that the captain be thrown off the flight. “Just throw him off dear.” The passenger remarked.
“Cabin to Cockpit, This is an Emergency”
At this point, the captain had had enough. He called the cockpit and asked the captain on duty to come and deal with the situation. The captain arrived, apologizing for the awkward situation and said, “The Agent has corrected your paperwork and has a voucher for future travel for you as well. Please go fetch your new boarding pass and your voucher and we’ll be on our way.”
A Victory for Entitlement
The entitled passenger left a triumphant smile on her face. But the captain knew that he had done the right thing. He had paid for his seat, and he was entitled to sit in it.
A First Class Liar
The Captain turns to the flight attendant and says, “Prepare the doors for departure and please get ready for take off.”
The doors close. The Captain returns to the cockpit and as we push back from the gate the entitled passenger is pounding on the glass next to jetway.
A Worrying Trend
There seems to be a very worrying trend emerging of entitled passengers claiming they have upgraded to first or business class, with no such upgrade purchased. This can evidently leave actual first-class passengers nervous about their seats being stolen from under them!
The Solution
As long as you have paid for your seat and your boarding pass is present, you should keep your correctly purchased seat. Although this can be a very difficult dispute to fight, you have to assert yourself and fetch an attendant to deal with difficult passengers and remain seated!
