Their apartment alarm had been professionally tested and confirmed as ineffective. So when their landlady lied that she’d had it updated and then failed to alert them to a gas leak, they had a big decision to make.
Good Tenants
She lived in an apartment in Ontario, Canada, with her boyfriend. They rented their apartment and were excellent tenants, never causing issues for their landlord.
Midnight Intruder
One Friday, their entire apartment building was evacuated after a ‘bum’-like person, as per the landlady’s words, broke into the building and busted a gas pipe at around midnight.
News at Work
She found out about it the next night at work; she worked across the street from the building and was open pretty late when her coworker asked where she and her boyfriend were the night before.
Both at Home
They’d actually been at home the night before! That was why the forthcoming news came as a complete shock! They’d watched a film and then, as they were both exhausted, had an early night.
A Shock Finding
She thought it quite a strange question initially, but her coworker went on to explain what had happened and that everyone was gathered outside. She said there were fire trucks, cops, the works!
Surprise Realization
She immediately contacted her boyfriend who was equally shocked. Neither of them could quite understand how they’d slept through so much drama. Surely, they should have heard a fire truck! They questioned whether it was a rumor!
A Confirmation
Her boyfriend, having made a few calls, called her back to say that her coworker was accurate in her report. He was angry that the landlady hadn’t knocked on their door and insisted that they evacuate immediately!
Bad Practice
He went on to say that it was her duty to ensure that all tenants were evacuated, and had there been a serious incident, the outcome could have been fatal! It was worrying to even think about, and they felt furious at the landlady.
Alarm Issues
For more context, a few months earlier, a fire marshal had inspected their alarm, the one that was connected to the building. He had said it needed to be replaced as it was faulty. It had yet to be replaced, however.
Confronting the Landlady
When her boyfriend confronted the landlady via text about the replacement alarm, she refused to give him a copy of the order. He said he needed to see it so he and his girlfriend could feel safe in the apartment.
Potential Dangers
He further advised that if their alarm didn’t work, they could fail to hear any potential hazards that would potentially put them in harm’s way. She kept making excuses about getting the order to him.
An Angry Rebuke
The landlady blamed them for not hearing the commotion and not waking up. She didn’t apologize and told them that if they didn’t feel comfortable, she’d make arrangements for them to move out.
Text Confrontation
The texts between her boyfriend and the landlady became quite heated. He had tried to call her, but she never picked up, leaving him no other option but to text. He’d told her he was irate at the fact she’d put them in grave danger and was a lousy landlady!
Sleeping Aids
The issue is that her boyfriend is an extremely heavy sleeper and, as a result, has a tendency to snore. In turn, she wears earplugs as it allows her a peaceful, snore-free night’s sleep. That would be why they heard nothing during the commotion.
Request for Alarm
All they had asked for was the alarm for their unit. It was a health and safety matter, and they assumed that any landlord would want to have them installed. She had let them down seriously, and it was likely to be a legal matter.
Lucky Escape
Luckily, neither of them nor their cats were hurt. But if the gas leak had been any more serious, they could have easily died in their sleep that night. It was a terrifying prospect!
Expert Opinion
Her boyfriend’s dad was a real estate agent, and the first thing he cited was the law that landlords needed to have an evacuation plan for all tenants and units. It seemed obvious, really!
Seeking Advice
She disliked confrontation and felt like they were too harsh in their texts, but they could have died if it were more serious. Her dad told her to report the landlady to the tenant tribunal or the fire department.
Fear of Retaliation
Her fear was, if she did report someone, did she risk being evicted? She knew it wouldn’t be legal for them to evict them over reporting them, but the fear was still in her mind. Do they just move out? Do they take legal action? Or do they push her for a new alarm? They had several options, and not wanting to have to move out, they had a huge decision to make.
