Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed citizens of the world, gather ’round as we embark on a global journey unlike any other. As your intrepid guides through the cultural wilderness, we’re about to divulge many people’s answers to a question that has piqued the curiosity of many a wise traveler: “What’s your country’s toxic culture you want to get rid of?”
Too Much Gambling

“Australia – the obsession with gambling. It destroys lives not much differently than alcohol or drugs. Personal experience with this.”
“I never really felt the horror until hubby and I went to a casino after seeing a musical show with his Mum. We thought it would be all exciting and happy like on TV, but it was so quiet apart from the machines, with rows and rows of dead-eyed people just feeding in money and watching it disappear. It was soul-destroying. Never again.”
Blame It All
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Employee-Blaming.jpg)
“Blame culture. It exists in all parts of our society (UK). Holding people accountable for mistakes or wrongdoing is understandable; however, pretty much everything is now approached with the mindset that blame cannot be attributed to them (be it an individual or organization) at all costs. It hamstrings many endeavors as people set out with the mindset of avoiding being blamed if things don’t go 100% to plan rather than focusing on a quality outcome in the first place. Not as destructive or evil as some on this list, but is a personal bugbear.”
Overdrinking

“Binge drink culture. Yes, I’m British.”
“That followed you across the seas all the way to Australia and New Zealand. Commonwealth countries and their habits.”
“I thought it was just us Australians. A friend told me that when he went to Germany, he was surprised that you could walk down the street with a beer! In Australia, in most states, it is illegal to drink in public areas like streets and parks because some people will drink too much and be a nuisance.”
Too Many Problems
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Exhausted-Annoyed-Woman.jpg)
“Don’t get me started – I am Russian.”
“Easier to count what we shouldn’t get rid of.”
“Fist bump of solidarity. I am glad my American kids wouldn’t have a lot of my cultural baggage.”
Not Smart
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Woman-Thinking-Dumb.jpg)
“Anti-intellectualism. Do you have an opinion that differs from everyone? They don’t respect or feel you’re entitled to your views and opinion; they will belittle you and everything you believe it until you agree to the consensus.”
“Global phenomenon, but it helps to remind yourself that, on average, half of all people are just less smart than you are and just don’t know any better. Fitting in is overrated.”
More Money
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Rich-Man.jpg)
“US here. This obsession that having more money makes you superior and is the primary pursuit in life.”
“I would say the bigger issue in the US in this regard is that people are obsessed with keeping up the APPEARANCE they are rich when they are, in fact, not. Can’t tell you how many people I know and have seen on social media that have a big house, multiple $60,000+ trucks/cars, and the most expensive-looking clothes and gadgets. They boast about it all the time, and then a few months later, their house is getting foreclosed on, and their vehicles are being repoed.”
Over Working
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Tokyo-Work.jpg)
“Our work culture. I live in Japan, which I guess is known for taking work very seriously and stuff like that, but it’s seriously going too far. People are literally working themselves to death here. So many people are working to the point of exhaustion. Actual, life-threatening exhaustion and other serious medical problems. This is a huge part of why Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. It’s either you work or die; there’s no in-between.”
Narcos, Everywhere

“México – Narco culture. From music as in narco corridos, dress style, worshiping LA Santa Muerte and the narcos etc etc…”
“I would add machismo too, which goes hand in hand with narco culture if you ask me. I miss many things about Mexico, but this one is a big nope.”
Unfair Violence
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Female-Violence.jpg)
“Gender-based violence in South Africa is bad. Just one of the many issues that South Africa has.”
“In Australia, one female is killed weekly by a partner/ex (and occasionally by a male stranger). It’s abhorrent.”
“Not to diminish the abhorrent nature of that fact, but that statistic doesn’t tell us anything useful because there is nothing to compare it to. It’s more honest to use “per capita” or a ratio, for example, of violence against women vs. violence against men.”
More Misinformation
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Constant-Moral-Outrage-2.jpg)
“There’s a significant portion of the population that is consuming copious amounts of misinformation specifically designed to cause outrage and dissonance among civilians. If we fight amongst ourselves, the rich can keep screwing us forever.”
“Except everyone thinks they are the ones who are enlightened, and everyone else is misinformed.”
Poor Parenting
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Parenting.jpg)
“Treating kids like retirement funds.”
“Tell me about it. If I mention my lack of interest in having kids, I’ll get the ‘I change my mind’ or ‘I am still young.’ Currently, I don’t even have my life figured out, and when I do manage to get it figured out, then I want to be able to enjoy life, have money to travel and afford things, and not get screwed over with the responsibility of taking care of kids.”
Hard Work
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Hard-Work.jpg)
“Working and labor. Not nearly enough PTO, people are forced to come into work sick, people are constantly denied vacation, many people aren’t paid appropriately for the work they do, and all of these workers are belittled and degraded for being ‘lazy’ because they can’t afford to live without government programs, or they are ‘entitled’ because they dare to ask for what they deserve. It’s ridiculous.”
Soccer Fans
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Soccer-Fans.jpg)
“Football (soccer) hooligans who tear through cities, setting fire to cars and scooters and destroying property and engaging in what’s best described as urban combat with homemade explosives with the riot control police.”
“Non-issue. You make it seem like this happens on a regular basis. Maybe once every five years, if that. Nothing compared to other countries. And nothing compared to what it used to be. There are way bigger problems to worry about.”
American Issues
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/America-Culture.jpg)
“American: exceptionalism, addiction to violence, winner takes all rather than any sort of compromise. These are all related and result from a truly terrible education system. We spend significantly more on criminalizing people than educating/socializing them.”
“American exceptionalism needs to die off. Personally, I believe that is the root of all our violence, lack of education, and misguided belief we’re the best country on earth. I love the U.S., but I can name ten countries that I’d love to move to that to have a better quality of life than us, and they have a sense of trust and community.”
Dastardly Disbelief
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Parent-and-Teen.jpg)
“Not believing children when they say something is wrong/someone is hurting them. A lot more of my old friends would be alive if the so-called ‘mandated reporters’ actually gave a damn.”
“I don’t like those people who don’t believe children that someone is hurting them. Why would you think a young child is lying about getting beaten?”
Confusing Customers
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Consumerism-Buying-at-Grocery.jpg)

“Consumerism.”
“Fast fashion and keeping up with famous people.”
Bad Idea
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Investment.jpg)
“Treating housing like a retirement investment, not a basic human need.”
“Nah, as a Kiwi in Canada, New Zealand is definitely worse for housing investment. Investing in stocks and ETFs is much easier/more known in Canada. In New Zealand, everyone is trying to be a landlord.”
Bad Boasting
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Boastful-Employee.jpg)
“Proudly boasting about how many jobs/hours you work just to get by, while not recognizing that all that really means is that you’re eking out every last ounce of labor you can muster on a daily basis to enrich someone else who is already rich and has absolutely no respect for your daily experience. You’re just a part of someone else’s story, the part that makes their life easier.”
Over-reaching Religion
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Different-Religion.jpg)
“Religion controlling anything and anywhere.”
“May not be literally true, but religion is the original one-sided argument. You can’t argue back against imaginary things, and then they decide the price of not following is eternal damnation. That model has been replicated repeatedly and used to define and maintain who is in power.”
Different Genders
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Gender-Difference.jpg)
“Where I live, people LOVE to have a son anytime over a daughter. When a woman has only daughters (for whatever scientific reason), people shame her for not being able to have a son as if she can do anything about it (notice how no one blames the husband); this is all because of this irrational belief my people have. A girl can bring shame to the family, but a boy can’t because toxic men want a son to ‘carry their name’ later on. And all those other misogynistic thoughts and acts. I hate it here.”
Worse?
![](https://becausemomsays.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Worse-Scenario.jpg)
“Always adding an “it could be worse” argument to any conversation.”
“Yeah, that line isn’t comforting anyone. Oh well, it could be worse, right?”
