The quarantine was difficult and life-changing for everyone worldwide. Even though we’ve finally progressed beyond the worst of the pandemic, there are some things we can’t help but miss from that time.
Commuting

“Most people weren’t going to work, so traveling was never more effortless or peaceful.”
“No traffic. My life didn’t change at all during, but man, was my commute to work better.”
“When I was living in Orange County, CA, my regular commute was nearly an hour with traffic. During the early days of lockdown, it would take 20 minutes.”
Empty Streets

“Most people spent their days indoors, so going outdoors to exercise could not have been easier.”
“Man… I would roller skate everywhere back then.”
“The giant parking lot across my condo was always empty because it was for a gym that shut down. I could rollerblade there any time of day, and it was completely safe.”
Flexible Working

“Luckily, in the modern world, most office staff had laptops. Businesses were happy to let people work in the PJs at home.”
“Corporations pulling the stick out about flexible work hours and locations.”
“Absolutely the best thing to come out of this all. I go to the office once or twice a week now and worked from abroad some months.”
Saving Money

“With few places to spend disposable income, many were lucky enough to save up lots of cash.”
“I had an expensive cruise cancel and was refunded – so with that, and what I saved during the lockdown, I could remodel my kitchen!”
“Because of the unemployment benefits, I was able to pay off some debt and save some money. This was pretty common among my friends. Just getting benefits and not leaving the house was a blessing.”
Extra Maternity Leave

“New mothers were lucky to get to have an extra long time with their newborn babies before they went back to work”
“The shutdowns happened one month before my daughter turned one. I got to spend about four months at home with her again. It was like maternity leave again, but more fun.”
“My son was born in October, and we shut down at the end of March. I didn’t work for two months, and it was like a second maternity leave.”
Quietness

“With so few people outside, the world became much quieter and more peaceful to live in, which people have understandably missed.”
“No cars on the street. No kids at the playground. I could sit on my front porch and listen to the sound of nature. It was like we were living in a dystopian future. Which I guess we are.”
Extra Time With Pets

A small but significant benefit was workers that could now spend their days with beloved animals.
“Absolutely loved being able to spend my dog’s last year with her. The quality time we wouldn’t have had.”
“Same, but for my kitty. I got so many extra cuddles that I wouldn’t have had if I had to go to work.”
Time At Home Guilt Free

“Many homebodies were now delighted that they didn’t have to make excuses not to go out.”
“Staying at home without making up excuses.”
“Chilling at home with a bottle of wine and watching a show without feeling like your friends are out and having fun without you.”
Cheap Fuel Costs

“A fringe benefit of the lockdown was that fuel prices were at record lows.”
“I miss the no traffic and when fuel prices dropped, although in the UK, we were still getting typically ripped off.”
No Seasonal Sickness

“With minimal socializing, people were not picking up colds and flu-like they usually would.”
”Healthiest two years of my life, tbh.”
“Not having a cold for two years.”
Online Socialising

“The new trend of video calling our friends and relatives regularly.”
“I actually saw my friends more since we were video chatting in groups often.”
“Yes, I miss playing party games online with friends because we all had time and nothing to do. I’ve tried time and again since things got better, and no one is ever interested. I miss Jackbox Party.”
Freedom

“With nothing but time, people had a new sense of what they could do each day without worrying about obligations.”
“I was off work for ten weeks. I miss eating when I was as hungry and sleeping when I was tired. Time meant nothing.”
“Lockdown forced me to stop and work on my mental health, and I am a lot healthier now than I was before. Miss that time when the world stopped.”
Environmental Benefits

“With fewer people driving and creating waste, the world got a little cleaner.”
“Sad state of affairs when it was so newsworthy that some cities could actually see the neighbouring mountain range because of the lack of pollution.”
“I would have commented that I noticed the rain was cleaner… yes, the rain! Usually, rain would leave spots on cars and windows, but it was super clean. It was crazy.”
More ‘Me’ Time

“The benefit of extra time was great for people to focus on themselves.”
“Taking care of myself, spending well-needed time with my family, and learning to bake and cook new dishes. I miss the extra time it gave me.”
Extra Space

“Few people outside and an obligation to stay apart meant that living in a city did not mean that you had to be in a crowd.”
“Personal space was a must. 6ft away from any other person at all times. Great times. Great times.”
Avoiding Family

“Some people relished the restriction to seeing some of their family members.”
“On the same now, having a valid excuse not to see my family. Except it wasn’t valid to them because they didn’t believe in covid.”
No Customer Interactions

“Service industry workers spend most of their time doing takeaway orders, making working much easier.”
“I was working at a store, and we were open for curbside pickup only, so no customers were allowed in the store, and we only had to do anything when an order came through. We were all sitting around the store playing video games, watching TV, and eating food all day. It was great.”
Reflecting On Life

“With so much extra time and nothing to do, it was a great time for people to think about what they were doing with their lives.”
“People are pausing to take stock of their lives and what is important, the slowing down of the industrial machine, the too brief focus on solidarity.”
Community Spirit

“It was a global issue that everyone everywhere could relate to.”
“It was one of those few times where it felt like the whole world was feeling and going through the same thing, and it was kind of a nice feeling. It was an interesting feeling knowing that somebody in Japan and Egypt, and Norway was all undergoing the same things.”
Government Support

“Many countries offered money and support to people who could not attend work.”
“The random ‘here’s money to survive’ government checks. And the student loan holders. Really helped me get my head above water for the first time in a long time.”
“The student loan interest and payment freeze were/are so clutch.”
