You can try acetone (you may have nail polish remover contenting acetone at home) on its own or combine it with some other household products listed in this article.

The acetone works similarly to alcohol in removing stubborn oil stains. You should check if your clothes contain acetate as you will not be able to use acetone if they do.

Baking Soda and Lemon Juice

Another method that can help you is making lemon juice and baking soda paste. This mixture is effective at removing lip gloss stains, even ones that have been on your clothes for a while.

The addition of lemon to baking soda helps to break down the stain due to its acidity in it.

Instructions

  1. Make up a mixture of 5 tablespoons of baking soda and the juice of a lemon then stir well
  2. This is best done in a bowl as it will form a thick paste rather than a solution that you can spray. You may need to adjust the ratio of lemon to get a paste that can easily be spread onto the item of clothing
  3. If the mixture is too thick you can add more vinegar or a drop of water.
  4. The paste can be applied directly to the fabric and allowed to soak for up to 20 minutes or until it dries out.
  5. Once the mixture is dry it can be gently scrubbed away, taking the lipgloss away with it.
  6. Launder as usual
  7. Dry in the sun for greater results

Baby Powder

Baby powder, or chalk if you don’t have any, can soak up the oil from the stain. This works best on new stains and will not be effective for old stains that have been in your clothes for a while.

Once you apply the powder to the stain it will begin to clump into balls as it mixes with the oil. This is normal and shows that the powder is affective.

Instructions

  1. Remove any excess lipgloss with a knife or spatula
  2. Pour the baby powder directly onto the stain
  3. Gently rub the baby powder into the strand area with your fingers
  4. Continue rubbing until you the powder no longer forms balls
  5. Spray the area with a picture of equal parts water and vinegar to pre-treat the clothing before laundering. Leave for a few hours or overnight if possible
  6. Wash clothing as normal and allow to dry

Salt

Rubbing salt with vinegar can make a stronger stain-removing solution that can be very effective. This is only applicable for new stains and is not likely to work on stains that have already been washed in.

Instructions

  1. Combine salt and vinegar to make a paste
  2. Rub the paste directly on the stained area of the clothing
  3. Leave to soak for about 20-30 minutes
  4. Use a damp cloth to wipe away the paste from the clothing
  5. Repeat the process if the stain remains
  6. Launder as usual

Store-Bough Detergents

If you have tried all of the above solutions and you still cannot remove the lipgloss stain you will need to turn to store-bought stain removers. You can get stain removal products in supermarkets and hardware stores or online.

Be careful to check the instructions on the packet so that you do not ruin your clothing as some commercial detergents may contain toxins and other stronger ingredients.

Summary

Lipgloss stains in your favorite items of clothing can be very difficult to get rid of and you may be worried that it is ruined forever.

However, you should not lose hope as there are lots of options to try and remove the stains ranging from homemade solutions such as baking powder and lemon to store-bought products that are specifically designed to get oil out of clothing.

You should be careful to test a small area first to ensure you do not discolor the item of clothing or spoil the material. If you are still having trouble removing the lipgloss stain you may need to take the item to a specialist cleaner.
