James Cameron – 1998 Oscars

However, opting to close his award speech with the movie quote, “I’m the king of the world!” made everyone pucker in awkwardness.
Joaquin Phoenix – 2020 Oscars

Despite a well-meaning attempt at speaking for those who don’t have a voice, Phoenix’s Oscar speech was a dud.
Phoenix was awarded the ‘Best Actor’ statue for his titular role in Joker, and what started as a humble speech developed into an attack on dairy farms.
Sally Field – 1985 Oscars

Despite being one of the most misquoted cringey speeches of all time (“You love me; you really love me!”), the OG version wasn’t much better.
When Field won an award for Places in the Heart, she rambled emotionally and said, “I can’t deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me!”
Gwyneth Paltrow – 1998 Oscars

In what has gone down in history as one of the most over-the-top displays of emotion, even Paltrow cringes when she thinks of it.
The actress collected her award for Shakespeare in Love and cried so uncontrollably that she has admitted she can’t even look at her Oscar without embarrassment.
Halle Berry – 2002 Oscars

Another PDE (public display of emotion) was Berry’s award speech for her role in Monster’s Ball.
Berry was the first African-American female to win Best Actress, which is an achievement in itself. However, her uncontrollable crying and shaking made everyone feel super awkward.
Sam Smith – 2015 Oscars

Sam Smith appeared not to have received the memo of ‘don’t go on stage while drunk’ and proceeded to do just that – with cringe-worthy results.
The singer stated he was the first openly-gay male to receive an Oscar, which in fact, isn’t true. Sir Ian McKellen was.
Sean Penn – 2004 Oscars

Penn is an individual who struggles to open his trap without putting his foot straight in it.
While collecting his ‘Best Actor’ award for Mystic River, he opened his speech with a tone-deaf joke about the then-Iraq war, which was met with tumbleweed silence.
Anne Hathaway – 2012 Oscars

Despite being wonderful actors, celebs fool no one when they act like they didn’t prepare to win their gong.
The general reaction to Hathaway’s speech for her role in Les Miserables was that it was over-rehearsed to come across as saccharine and innocent.
Jack Palance – 1992 Oscars

That’s precisely what Palance did when he won gold for City Slickers – he quite literally got on all-fours and did some push-ups on the stage.
Matthew McConaughey – 2014 Oscars

Despite a rep as being one of the nicest and most humble actors in Hollywood, McConaughey’s Oscar speech sure was egotistical.
McConaughey rambled on during his speech about his “hero,” who everyone thought was God. Turns out it was himself.
Jacqueline Bisset – 2014 Golden Globes

While the award speech was scattered, disorganized, and, well, a bit of a kerfuffle, the reason why was very relatable.
Bisset later explained the reason her speech was a disaster was that “she hadn’t eaten yet” and “all [she] could think about was her dinner.” Girl, same.

Kathy Griffin’s outspoken and controversial nature has earned her many an enemy in her time, and her Emmy win only further fueled the fire.
Griffin took the opportunity to take a swipe at religion and those who referenced God during speeches. She even rounded it off with “suck it, Jesus,” which didn’t go down well with many.
Oliver Stone – 1979 Golden Globes

Stone won the gong for Best Screenplay for the movie Midnight Express, but instead of being grateful for his accolade, what unfolded was a rant.
Stone launched a verbal attack on the U.S. government about the handling of the Vietnam War and ruffled a few feathers. He was even removed from the podium by security.
Angelina Jolie – 2000 Oscars

There’s no doubt about it; in her earlier years, Angelina Jolie was something of a wild child, and her bonkers public behavior kept us captivated.
However, she took it perhaps a tad too far while accepting her award for Girl, Interrupted by stating she was “so in love with [her] brother” – and then later locking lips with him.
Oliver Stone (Again) – 2008 Baftas

Stone went speech rogue again when he appeared at the 2007 Bafta Awards and used the opportunity to crack a joke about a series of murders.
The UK had recently experienced a prostitute serial killer, and Stone japed that “nothing changes” in reference to the Ripper murders (1888-1891), which no one found amusing.
