We all wish our lives were more like the movies: full of action, excitement, and drama. But recently, a group of online users discussed what parts of real life are really nothing like how they’re portrayed in movies.
Talking on the Phone

As one reader pointed out, “In movies, they never say ‘Goodbye’ on the phone, they just hang up.”
Driving

Another aspect of everyday life, driving is nothing like it seems in the movies. One commenter was keen to remind everyone that you “really have to pay attention to the road.”
Another user agreed, pointing out how rare it is to “get a parking space just outside where you need to be.”
Air Conditioning Vents

A common trope of action films often sees the hero crawling through an air conditioning vent but one person complained that often they aren’t “large enough for an adult to crawl through” and are never “spotlessly clean”. They also complained that crawling through a vent is not a quiet activity, “In reality, the banging of you moving about would echo and be loud.”
Breakfast

Someone pointed out that not every mom gets up “early to cook their family a three-course breakfast.” And if they did, they wouldn’t be impressed to see the “children and husband grab a piece of toast on their way out the door.”
Medical Care

While one online user pointed out that “ripping out your IV is a terrible idea,” another complained that “people who have been in a coma don’t just pull off their monitor leads and walk off looking for a nurse.”
Digging a Grave

One online user revealed that “digging a grave” is nothing like it is in the movies. “Soil is much harder than what movies pretend!”
Another agreed, complaining that hand-dug graves are “always so perfectly rectangle, with straight sides.”
Carrying a Body

Far harder than movies make it look as one reader “found out the hard way when my wife was sick and fainted. An unconscious body is surprisingly limp and slippery.”
Another user agreed, explaining that “This is why the Fireman’s carry exists. It’s surprisingly hard to pick up a body.”
Hacking

As any computer nerd will tell you, hacking is far more complicated in real life than the movies make it seem. It also “doesn’t involve furious typing.” One person explained that it is “more like running an antivirus scan to check for what the IT department forgot to lockdown.”
Car Accidents

One online user observed that car accidents are rarely realistic, “People don’t just lightly bleed from their heads then die, they are some of the goriest, most traumatic deaths I’ve seen.”
But, looking on the bright side, another pointed out that at least “most fender benders don’t result in an explosion.”
Getting Injured

One commenter was keen to point out that “getting shot is NOT A FLESH WOUND.”
Another user agreed, complaining that it is very unrealistic when a “main character gets shot in the thigh, and it just causes him to limp for a few minutes.”
Family Dynamics

Thanks to the movies, one reader has spent too long dreaming of a movie family where “everyone has their quirks and dysfunctions” but they “still manage to be a family unit and have each other’s backs when things get tough.”
Going Through Glass

Never a good idea, one reader pointed out that going through a glass window or door is “dangerous” because there are “potential major lacerations every time.”
Dialogue

Young people’s dialogue is a bugbear. “Every time there is a teenager or young adult in a movie, it always sounds like what a 40-year-old person thinks a teenager sounds like. They think watching 5 TikToks is enough research.”
Suppressors

Gun suppressors, also known as silencers, for one commenter, are “WAY too quiet.” They explained that in movies, suppressors make it “sound like a staple gun going off. In reality, they make a gun quieter, but they very much still sound like a gun.”
Waking Up

Something we all do every day, but is it really like we see in the movies? One reader pointed out that “You do not wake up fully refreshed, dressed, hair done, and the blankets are still neat on the bed.”
Sharks
Getting a bad rap in movies since Jaws, one reader was keen to defend sharks, explaining that they aren’t “bloodthirsty man-eaters who kill humans for sport.” While not completely harmless, “most sharks don’t actually like the taste of human and will spit it out.”
Getting Around the City
In movies, cities are easily navigated, but one online user was keen to point out how unrealistic this is. “They make it seem like to get from Times Square to the Brooklyn Bridge, you just walk around the corner.” In reality “it takes more like a half hour.”
Office Life
“Working in an office” is nothing like it is depicted in the movies. “I really question whether a screenwriter or director has worked a regular 9-5 office job a day in their lives.”
Houses
The housing ladder is notoriously difficult to get onto. Unless you’re in a movie. One online user complained about just how often “teachers or people with low-paying jobs” are shown “owning or renting massive houses/apartments.”
Another user agreed, adding that often the apartments are “huge” and with “spectacular views in NYC.”
Wedding Cake Tasting
A disappointing experience for one online user who expected it to be like it is in rom-coms “where we would get a bunch of different slices to try. Instead, we got a taste of the pastry for the vanilla cake and little plastic cups of what the layers could be, and we had to mix and match everything ourselves to pick what we wanted.”
