Have you ever witnessed behavior from parents in public that made you cringe? As someone who has worked as a server, I’ve seen my fair share of unfortunate incidents. One thing that stands out is how some parents allow their children to behave disrespectfully toward others. It’s a clear sign of poor parenting and can leave a lasting negative impression on those around them.
It was shocking. After a recent internet poll, these were the top ten voted signs of being a trashy parent.
1. Their Child Could Never Do Anything Wrong
Someone volunteered that parents who allow their children to set the world on fire and blame everyone else so they may avoid their responsibility are the worst. “My sister-in-law does this. Her kid could set someone on fire, and she’d go, well, it’s not HIS fault she has on such flammable clothes!”
2. Moms Competing With Their Daughters
Others noted that they are disgusted by mothers who view their children as competition. It is trashy and emotionally damaging to the daughter. One volunteered that her mother was this way.
“If she thinks she needs to compete with me, I’ll see how far she’ll go. She’s already bought a GIGANTIC house just to ‘one up’ me and my husband, and I think it’s hilarious.”
3. Where is Your Mom or Dad
Another sign that screams trashy parents is when they leave children unattended to destroy businesses. Someone confessed they lost their cool once publicly after three kids wreaked havoc at a department store.
She explained she and her mother-in-law were shopping when these three kids, aged eight and fifteen, were running, destroying displays, climbing under aisles of clothing, and annihilating the toy aisle.
“The look the oldest sibling gave me when I left was incredible. How dare I tell a bunch of kids old enough to know better to stop causing trouble? No parents in sight either.”
4. The Exploitation of Your Child
Parents who exploit their children are the worst. One user expressed they have an acquaintance who has a son with behavioral issues. She repeatedly posts “professional-level candid pictures,” accompanied by a long story about the difficulty of raising her child.
Nonetheless, the stories usually wrap around her being a fantastic mother who is happy God “gave her this challenge because she’s not perfect and is just trying to be the best mom she can be.”
She continued that this acquaintance always includes a couple of sentences about how much she’s learned from his challenges. Noting, “her son’s issues might be a strength for him and how much his challenges have taught her.”
5. Encouraging Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Another sign of toxic parenting is encouraging Unsportsmanlike Conduct. It screams trashy when you’re promoting your child to punch another player because they tripped over them or yell profanities at the officials at a little league game.
One T-Ball coach shared a story about a mother screaming inches from his face because he had taken her preschool to a second-grade-aged child out for one inning.
He explained the kid had been hitting any kids with a helmet on their heads with a baseball bat. “It was one of the wildest things that happened to me. Not the last, though.”
6. Allowing Your Toddler to Drink Soda
Someone confessed that while waiting tables in college, she witnessed a mom fill a bottle with Coca-Cola for her toddler. “I thought it was just horrible.”
Another person shared that her family member also gives her toddler soda and that she recently saw “pics of her smiling – brown stumps at the gums.”
7. Emotionally Blackmailing Your Children
Emotionally blackmailing your children using guilt and obligation to control them was labeled trashy and unhealthy. However, one woman shared that even at 48 years old, her mother is this way with manipulation, guilt, and obligation.
She explained that she went no contact with her mother in November of last year but is still experiencing “guilt trips and longings for what I wish she had been.” Elaborating that her mother never has or will respect her.
8. Allowing Your Child to be Destructive
Another person told a story about being in an older movie store where a child was using a ball to bash against the glass and throwing movies all over the floor. Everyone agreed that allowing children to run free and destroy property is trashy.
Finally, they shared that the mother didn’t prevent her child from continued behavior despite the customer and the manager’s protests. “I don’t fault the child; they don’t know any better. However, the mother should’ve been asked to leave the store with her son.”
9. Putting Themselves Before Their Children
Putting themselves before their kids want and need is trashy. Someone stated that a teacher shared a story about a student dressed like she was homeless in torn shoes and clothing and was wearing shorts in the middle of wintertime.
So she bought her a winter coat. The next day, the mother showed up for a conference wearing the kid’s coat!
10. Sick and Contagious Children
Finally, people think it’s trashy when parents drop their contagiously sick children off at childcare providers because they want a night out. Someone explained that she babysat a friend’s kids over a weekend for her.
As a result, she came down with strep throat. She was more than displeased that her friend failed to tell her until after she was personally sick that her kids had strep throat.
