Belittled by her school guidance counselor and faced with severe anxiety after being told not to apply for university, the student decided to do it anyway! And when she got her degree, she had no time for those who didn’t believe in her!
Tough Start
Back in high school, her life was far from easy. She had a stepfather who adopted her and consistently ignored her and a mother who was dedicated to pleasing him. He was a classic narcissist.
Painful Memories
Her struggle with anxiety and focus made school a challenging experience, despite her consistent attendance and solid performance on assignments. She was always panicking about something and had low self-esteem.
Trouble Focusing
Her guidance counselor remained constant throughout her high school years, and every year, they would have a meeting where the girl would express her need for extra support due to her issues with focus.
Lack of Care
She consistently dismissed her concerns, attributing the girl’s struggles to a lack of effort. She also used the fact that the girl’s stepdad was a social worker for the school board and happened to be her good personal friend!
Future Desires
When the time came to discuss college, universities, or trade schools, she expressed her interest in psychology and her aspirations to become a counselor or teach psychology in the future. She’d always hoped to help others who struggled like she had.
A Shocking Reaction
Her reaction was disheartening! She actually scoffed at the girl and told her “Please, do not apply to university. It would be a huge disappointment for you. You are not university material, and you may be better suited for a community college or even a certificate in administration!”
A Bleak Future
The girl was mortified! She trusted that the guidance counselor was qualified to offer such advice, so to be told she wasn’t smart enough for university was a real knock to her already damaged self-esteem! Her outlook wasn’t as bright as she’d once hoped.
Loss of Hope
The girl felt there was absolutely nothing wrong with attending a community college or earning a certificate in a particular field. However, her counselor’s words left a lasting impact, making me feel she wasn’t intelligent or capable enough to pursue her passions.
Chasing Dreams
Fast forward to her late twenties, the woman had held various odd jobs, but none had satisfied her. She always held a passion for university, and one day decided to just go for it! She decided she was applying to university!
An Overachiever
To her surprise, she was accepted, and that wasn’t even the best part. She graduated with honors and loved it so much that she even pursued another bachelor’s degree in teacher’s college, once again graduating with honors. Not smart enough, huh?
A Grand Achievement
About five years ago, she successfully completed her Master’s in behavioral psychology, achieving her long-held dream. She never thought she stood a chance after the words of her counselor, but she’d proved her wrong!
A Tragic Loss
Sadly, her stepfather passed away two years ago, and during his visitation, her old guidance counselor appeared. They were great friends, as she’d once reminded her!
Blissful Ignorance
The counselor approached her as if they were old friends. She smiled and hugged her, expressing her condolences. The woman instantly cut her off, claiming, “Oh! I’m sorry, you must be confusing me with someone else!”
Shock Encounter
Her expression shifted to one of shock as she said, “I was your guidance counselor for four years.” The woman pretended to think long and hard! She frowned at her and tilted her head in mock thought!
A Lost Cause
Eventually, she simply shook her head and offered a blank look before shrugging and saying, “Sorry, I honestly don’t remember you. You really must have me mixed up with another of your bright students!”
A Sad Goodbye
As the woman walked away, she noticed a hint of confusion and disappointment in her eyes; she likely hoped the woman would recall her as a helpful figure from her teenage years. If only she knew!
A Non-Entity
Despite the impact she had on the woman, she wanted – NEEDED her to understand that she was nothing to her. She concealed the effect her words had had on her, though deep down, she had caused her so much pain.
Self Satisfaction
The experience brought her immense satisfaction, and she felt victorious for both refusing even to acknowledge her toxic counselor and failing to sink to a low by calling her out! Dignity in check!
Achieved Goals
No thanks to her counselor, the woman now teaches psychology to future counselors, achieving the very goal she had originally set for herself. It was a great feeling to have proven her wrong!
Lasting Fears
Her only fear was that the counselor might have said the same to someone else who might not have been as lucky as her. But she hoped that her new role would enable her to encourage her students to go for it, whatever ‘it’ might be, regardless of skillset or talent!
