Gabrielle Union, Actress and author has recently shared her unconventional views on infidelity and open relationships. Her comments have stirred up controversy and sparked discussions among people, leading to both criticism and support for her stance.
She admits she cheated on her first husband and didn’t regret it.
Gabrielle Union and Chris Howard were married in 2001 and divorced in 2006. The couple married under the pretense that it shouldn’t get in the way of their dating life. An interesting ideology to hold before entering a contractually binding relationship in a country where polyamory is largely illegal.
They state their relationship shouldn’t have gone past the dating phase, and they really should never have married.
And we can see why! The decision to share vows of love, integrity, and monogamy at a time when the relationship was shaky is an odd one.
The fact that Union states that she was ‘entitled’ to Infidelity is of concern. Of course, open relationships exist, but usually, the partners don’t view their actions outside of the relationship as cheating.
Isn’t it true that sleeping with other people outside of the marriage is not considered cheating when you engage in a consensual, open relationship?
Open relationships are emotional minefields that only work when the couple is extremely open and communicative- two things Union and Howard didn’t seem to have. Their decision to have an open relationship, yet both refer to their Infidelity as cheating, is confusing. Union claims she should have felt more guilty!
But why? Didn’t you choose an open relationship? Why view Infidelity as wrong and something to feel guilty about?
You know it’s a bad sign when your friends gift you couples therapy sessions.
Union and Howard attended therapy, with their session ending with the therapist suggesting they separate because they have “nothing in common.” This is pretty harsh considering the therapist makes a living from fixing couples, not telling them to part ways and end their couples therapy!
The dysfunctional marriage seemed fated to end in disaster. And the setup indeed calls into question the validity of an open relationship.
Can they ever work? Should you be able to see other people while married? Does it go against the sanctity of marriage?
Well, we are still determining. Although open relationships and marriages exist and can work, more often than not, they end in disaster. But you do you!
Fortunately, the couple didn’t bring children into the mix, saving a lot of heartache and turmoil.
Union is now remarried to Dwayne Wade, the former NBA player, and they raise children together. Whether that relationship is open or not, we aren’t sure.
