A woman asked the Reddit community if she was in the wrong for a food decision involving her daughter.
Her Daughter Isn’t Incredibly Healthy.
“My daughter is overweight. I didn’t want to put this in the post initially, but commenters keep telling me to, so I will.
She is gaining weight and has been, and her diet isn’t healthy because she often buys herself snacks and fast food with her own money.”
The woman cooked dinner for her family, and her daughter had a request.
“My family had steak tonight for dinner. A large piece of pure fat was on one of the steaks, which I cut off to throw away. My daughter (16) told me not to throw it out and that she wanted to eat it.”
“I cut off a small slice from the fat and gave it to her, but she insisted I give her the whole thing. It was a massive piece of fat, which would be super unhealthy.
I told her she didn’t need a slice of fat half the size of her entire steak and said that would be ridiculous. She got upset that I ‘forced her to waste food she wanted.’”.
The woman decided with her daughter’s best interest in mind.
“I see part of my responsibility as a parent to keep my children at least relatively healthy and not feed them pure beef fat just ‘cause they want it.”
Is She in the Wrong?
The woman’s daughter insisted that her mother post this conundrum to prove that her mother was in the wrong.
“AITA for throwing it away? It was on my plate. I didn’t take it from hers.”
Reddit Users Shared Their Opinions.
“NTA. It’s not wasted when it’s inedible. Sure, you can swallow everything on your plate, including bones.
What’s the point, however? Furthermore, you’re not obligated to give anything on your plate to somebody else. It’s your food so you can decide to do whatever with it.”
Mom Was Looking Out for Her Daughter.
“One piece of fat will not cause damage, but poor eating habits will cause a lifetime of health problems. It is OP’s job to do what is in the daughter’s best interest, and trying to teach her healthy eating habits certainly qualifies.
Just like placing restrictions on how/when/where a teenager can drive, even if the team ‘knows better’ is a thing that responsible parents should do.”
Some Additional Help Is Needed.
“OP [original poster], but it might be time to meet with a nutritionist with your daughter.
If she’s gaining weight, overweight, and fighting over pieces of fat, she might need to learn more about nutrition. If it isn’t a nutritional thing, then maybe a therapist.”
What do you think? Should the mom have let her daughter eat the piece of fat?
