Boomers may enjoy watching the news on TV or reading the newspaper while having breakfast. Millennials and Gen Z-ers may not be that interested in what’s happening worldwide.
When it comes to being in touch with current affairs at both a national and international level, are the post-Boomer generations ignorant?
One online community looks at the issue, which is what they have to say.
What To Believe?
“They (Boomers) don’t trust the current established sources of information because they’re used to a paradigm where news sources had standards and publishing was largely inaccessible, so if you did get published or did make it on the news, you had something worthwhile to say.
Nowadays you have “news” channels with biased infotainment programming, comedy channels with biased news-focused programming, insincere trolling, talk radio where they’re ‘just asking questions,’ Wikipedia (‘anyone can write something on the internet, that doesn’t mean it’s true’), and straight up government-backed misinformation campaigns. If you’re savvy, you can tell the difference between credible and fake news sources. ”
I Don’t Know
“ We have grown up used to the idea that there is an answer within seconds of any question we may possibly have. It’s the true response to the child’s ever-popular “Why?” This means info age generations are used to being able to say, “I don’t know, but I can look it up.” Whereas generations before, the accepted norm is “I don’t know,” as in “Maybe try asking someone who would,” or just lying and trusting the OTHER person also doesn’t know and won’t question it until beyond they’ve lost interest or it they can call you out on it. The second bit often results in two people who want to sound smart lying to each other about facts based on anecdotal evidence (or nothing) until they agree… based on complete nonsense. And then believe it’s the truth.”
Ignorance Is A Choice
“I think it’s a matter of too much information at times. The propaganda is so entangled in real news that it’s hard for some young and older people to tell the difference. Before, most people got the same info. TV news, newspapers, and magazines read and heard the same editorials for the most part. So really, people used more critical thinking; they all took very similar news and information and reached their own conclusions. If you were super interested in something, you bought books and went to the library. Now it’s all a bubble. That being said, there are places to get info besides the internet. NPR, PBS. Also, as an older GenXer, almost a boomer. I know tons of very young people who know next to nothing. And I don’t mean that in the ‘I’ve lived longer and know more than you’ way. I mean, people are really ignorant and our educational system is failing them. Truly, I don’t think ignorance is necessarily age-related. I think it’s pure ignorance, sometimes wilful ignorance.”
The Influencers Have Spoken
“I don’t know what you mean by boomers; the term is misused nowadays to describe anyone who isn’t a Zoomer. While in reality, boomers are actually 60/70 years and above. Anyway, most 40+ that I know think the current Zoomers (and younger) are the most ignorant generation in recent decades. They have information at their fingertips, yet they spend their time on TikTok and following ‘influencers’ rather than credible sources… go figure.”
It’s A Boomer-based Conspiracy
“I think your reaction proves my point. The trillions of dollars poured into marketing (run by cynical 40+ ‘boomers’) through social media (also run by 40+ ‘boomers’) has made you think the world is about media. Your ‘life decisions’ are made by those boomers, and you think they are ignorant… My generation has turned your generation into puppets, making me sad.”
Thanks, Fox
“So many of them (Boomers) just take whatever rubbish they hear on fox news and run with it. I work with one of them, and I have to ask him at least once a week if he listens to himself. I’ll repeat some of the nonsense he says and ask him if it sounds sane.”
Who’s More Ignorant?
Boomers may like to keep their finger on the news, but are Millennials and GenZers that need to be made aware of national and global affairs?
Ask post-Boomer generations about what’s happening in the world, and you’ll be surprised at how aware they are. There is now a suspicion about the accuracy of the news mainstream media provides.
Millennials and Gen Z-ers prefer to get their information from online sources. Yet that raises the question about how legitimate the information is.
Ignorance seems more aligned with being unwilling to see another person’s point of view rather than having no clue. A situation that spans generations.
