Have you ever been called out at work for something you didn’t do? We all know a false claim can get an employee fired, with or without backing up the facts. A man recently went online to share his petty revenge story – and how he showed his company what would happen if he got fired.
Helper Status
The man, let’s call him “Dan,” worked in an office where he was technically just a helper. And while he only had a lower title, he took on a big workload to provide assistance. In his words, he had a “ridiculous amount of work.”
He Was Useful
Dan prided himself on his usefulness in making things easier for the other employees. Most of the people who worked in the office didn’t know much about computers and were technologically inept. For example, one man would spend half his day copying items and passing them into another program they were using.
Scripted
To really help out, Dan created some computer code to help make their lives easier. He wrote a program to do the task automatically but did not tell the other employee. So, Dan would just run it occasionally as part of his responsibilities. Compliments of his computer script saved the office almost 15 hours of daily work.
Met with Dislike
One day, Dan met a new coworker, “Lenny,” at a morning meeting – and eyebrows were raised. His office was having a team meeting, and Lenny sat silent and only took notes.
Rude
At one point, another worker brought up the name of one of Dan’s customers. He said, “Oh, is that the 300-lb guy with a big beard?” His boss immediately corrected him by saying it was not the man he described, and the conversation continued.
Meanie
Fast forward about a week, and Lenny started acting cruelly toward Dan, and he wasn’t sure why. Lenny ignored him during group conversations and would literally sometimes scoff, which was completely uncalled for. Who scoffs at people?
A Search
Dan was having a rough week looking for some essential files, and people in the office were yelling all day. Dan was exasperated. There was too much to do, and Dan was having anxiety attacks at home in the middle of the night. But, compliments of it finally being Friday, he struggled but did make it through the week.
Personal
As Dan was looking for one particular file, he ended up deep in the company’s file structure, and the search returned a personal folder structure within one of the drives. Out of curiosity, Dan clicked on it and found Lenny’s notes. He opened it – and there was a whole section about himself! He quickly realized that Lenny goes from location to location getting people fired to save the CEO money.
Nickname Callout
Dan was dumbfounded when he realized the new guy was keeping tabs on him. He scrolled through Lenny’s, and at the top, he saw, “He thought a 4’10’, 24-year-old female patient was a 300-pound bearded man. Atrocious attention to detail.”
I’m Out
Dan had to do something, or else his job was on the line. In combination with his job (which he generally liked and enjoyed helping people), knowing he wasn’t getting paid enough for his effort, the horrible week he had, and his coworker’s comments, enough was enough.
The Emails Go Out
Dan set up three email configurations. First, to his boss, letting him know he would be taking two weeks of vacation time to be sent at 10 p.m. that night. Second, to the company to let them know he wouldn’t be around for two weeks, so whatever work they need him to do, they will need to do themselves to be sent Monday at 4 am.
Lastly, for any emails that came in, Dan set an auto-response that said, “I will be out for an unknown amount of time; for any routine, emergency, or even occasional items, it is imperative you reach out to my coworker, Lenny, for assistance.”
Amped Revenge
Dan turned off every automated task he had ever set up. Next, he swung by Lenny’s temporary office and said, “I think I found a way to make your job easier!” He didn’t even turn his head to look but raised one eyebrow.
Urge Resisted
Dan got multiple calls on Monday morning that he didn’t answer, but it took some resisting to keep the phone ringing and not pick it up. It didn’t last long, however.
Anxious
Dan thought about the tasks that needed a two-day turnaround because there was no way some of the coworkers would be able to keep up with their normal duties. And Dan guaranteed at least two people were no longer doing their normal jobs to keep up with his automated tasks.
The Boss Pleads
Dan got a long email from his boss to his personal account that must have been on his resume when he applied for the position. The boss told him that he was a smart person and knew Dan was aware of Lenny’s position and what his role was. He asked Dan to call him because it was very important, but the boss didn’t get his hopes up.
Finally, Great News
The boss then added that he had talked with Lenny, and that he would be leaving the office. He then explained the progress meetings seemed to be going in the wrong direction and that Dan was one of our most valuable employees.
Begging
Dan’s boss also mentioned that he figured he was probably looking at other jobs at this point, or maybe he had even started one, but he hoped not. From the email, Dan knew just how valuable he was to the office team, and the boss offered him a sizable raise.
Cha-Ching!
Dan returned on Monday with a $10,000 raise, and Lenny was gone. His boss apologized again and told Dan he never had a say in Lenny being hired.
A Meanie Moral
While Dan knew his position was of a “helper” status, that didn’t give Lenny a right to keep personal, vindictive files on him to try to belittle his use in the office. Additionally, it was wrong of the boss not to let Dan know how valuable he was until after he refused to come back to work. Dan stood strong and not only got his job back and received a nice salary increase but Lenny got sacked.
