OP is a 19-year-old male who has been friends with a 20-year-old female for a few years. His friend recently got engaged and invited him to a small costume party to celebrate. He asked if there was a theme, and she said no. As a cosplayer, he had many costume options but didn’t want to wear an anime costume. He thought dressing up as the Corpse Bride for an engagement party would be funny.
It Was Actually a Wedding
When he arrived, everything seemed normal. A few people complimented his costume, and he was having fun. However, ten minutes later, his friend’s fiancé announced that this was actually their wedding. OP was shocked but asked if he should quickly go home and change his outfit. The fiancé told him it was fine, so he followed everyone outside for the ceremony.
After the wedding, OP tried to celebrate with his friend, but she kept making excuses to avoid talking to him. He assumed it was because she was tired from the big day. However, when he got home, his friend texted him, cussing him out and accusing him of ruining her wedding. She said it was basic knowledge not to wear a wedding dress to a wedding.
OP reminded her that he had no idea it was a wedding and had asked her now-husband if he should change, and he said it was fine. Her husband then contacted OP, blaming him for the couple’s argument and saying he should have changed regardless.
OP tried to apologize to his friend, but she and her husband blocked him on everything. He wonders if he is the a**hole for not changing out of the wedding dress once he finds out it was a wedding.

The Husband Was Definitely In The Wrong
The husband was wrong in this story for not correctly informing OP that the costume party was a wedding. As the groom, it was his responsibility to ensure that all the guests were aware of the nature of the event, especially if it was a surprise wedding. When OP realized his mistake and asked if he should change out of his costume, the husband assured him that it was fine, so he followed everyone outside for the ceremony.
Later, when the friend accused OP of ruining her wedding by wearing a wedding dress, the husband should have taken responsibility for the miscommunication and defended OP. Instead, he blamed OP for not changing out of the dress and caused further tension between the couple and OP.
One commenter summarised a lot of people’s opinions, saying: “This ‘husband’ just has no spine, sorry.”
“Trying to LIE about a decision he made in goodwill, not knowing that it upset his now wife, is just… I dunno. Sad, I guess. Also I don’t really understand the mentality behind “you ruined my special day” by wearing a costume.”
The ‘Bride’ Was Being Unreasonable
In this story, the wife is wrong for not taking responsibility for the miscommunication and overreacting to OP’s costume choice. It was not OP’s fault that he was not informed in advance that the party was a wedding, and he had no reason to believe that his costume was inappropriate since he was told there was no theme for the party.
After the fiancé announced it was a wedding, OP asked if he should change his outfit, and the fiancé said it was fine. Therefore, it is not reasonable for the wife to blame OP for ruining her wedding since he tried to rectify the situation as soon as he found out.
Additionally, it is not reasonable to expect OP to know that it is basic knowledge not to wear a wedding dress to a wedding. The costume OP chose was not a wedding dress, and he had no reason to believe it was inappropriate. The wife’s accusation that OP ruined her wedding by wearing a wedding dress is unreasonable. It shows that she is not taking responsibility for the miscommunication that led to the situation.
Furthermore, the wife’s reaction to the situation by ignoring OP and blocking him on everything is disproportionate to the problem. Instead of calmly discussing the miscommunication and finding a solution, she chose to overreact and cut off communication with a friend who had no intention of causing any harm.
