A man employed as a middle manager in the public sector recently faced two lawsuits filed by his useless ex-employee and his father. Now the father is on his side, and the ex-employee is facing the consequences of his actions.
He was a middle manager for 20 years
He worked s a public employee middle manager for 20 years. He reported to a department head, who reported to the mayor. Around five-to-ten employees worked under him, most of which were part-time. He tried to make their time with him valuable by helping them to pad out their resumes, do paid training, and so on.
One of his employees had an ego problem
One of his employees, Tim, started off as a good employee but quickly decided he was the best employee of all time. His overconfidence often led to mistakes and him being over-extended, then needing to be bailed out. He was good at basic tasks but had a hard time with math, grammar, and interacting with adults.
Part of the job was seeking federal grants
One part of his job was seeking federal grants for small infrastructure projects, such as adding benches to nature trails or curb cuts to sidewalks. His part-time staff, including Tim, would help administer the grants, sometimes doing the work and other times overseeing the contractors.
He put Tim in charge of one of these grants
The grants were extremely clear, and Tim was put in charge of the final phase, phase three, of a bridge grant. Tim’s role was to continue the process that had already been started of matching volunteers with labor hours. The process was practically automatic, and all Tim had to do was show up with materials and stay out of the way.
He had to keep Tim on track
In order to keep things on track to stay in spec, he had to keep a close eye on Tim. Still, Tim barely did an adequate job. The team was meant to be spending money on improving water quality, but Tim wanted to improve recreation. He and Tim exchanged lots of emails about this.
Tim continued to underperform
That fall, Tim continued to struggle with basic tasks. On top of this, he demanded a promotion for his outstanding work, despite not meeting the very clear requirements for an upgrade. The underperforming employee had been given opportunities to become qualified but hadn’t due to his own laziness. Eventually, Tim became intentionally negligent, putting himself and others in danger.
He had no choice but to let Tim go
After an appalling incident, he called Tim into his office and gave him the opportunity to resign or be fired. Resigning would have meant Tim would be eligible for a job in a different department, but Tim refused to resign. This meant he had no choice but to terminate Tim’s contract. Despite being warned, Tim seemed shocked at this turn of events.
He looked into Tim’s history
Tim’s Dad was a well-known attorney, so he looked into his ex-employee’s criminal record. He found that Tim had been bailed out of charges time and time again. It was clear that throughout life, his daddy had been bailing him out of his mistakes.
Tim came after him
He soon found out that Tim had called the federal division overseeing grants and reported him for fraud. The argument was that the money used for the bridges should have been a lower priority, making it a misuse of funds. An investigation was launched, but his records were immaculate. They showed that Tim had tried to divert funds, and he had stopped him. Tim was yelled out of the building for wasting city and federal time.
Tim filed another lawsuit against him
Next, a wrongful termination suit was filed against him. Tim had told his attorney Dad about ‘apparent mistreatment,’ and his dad had filed another lawsuit. He responded to this second attack by sending hundreds of pages of documentation with a summary to the city attorney. He was actually in City Hall when Tim’s father came slinking out of the legal department apologizing for his idiot son.
Tim suffered the consequences
A mutual friend informed him the father had given Tim a thorough reprimanding and withdrawn the financial support that had allowed Tim to work part-time in the first place. He is doing better today, but right around that time, his wife discovered his ongoing affair. Plus, the person he was having an affair with got pregnant, and things got rough.
The internet responded
One commentator said, “‘He was good at basic tasks,’ so far so good, ‘But had a hard time with math, grammar, and interacting with adults.’I have to ask what you consider basic tasks…”
Another reader responded, “‘Show up and stay out of the way’ is pretty basic. I guess it’s the ‘stay out of the way’ part his ego (and poor education) couldn’t handle.”
