Enjoy Travel surveyed their audience for the sexiest accents in the USA. The votes were tallied and the results showed that these are top 20 accents within America that are sure to send shivers down your spine (in a good way). Which one(s) are your favorite?
Tennesseean
Tired and need to go to “bay-ud”? the drawl of Tennessee may have you feeling all goosebumpy. Oh, then there is the way those from the Volunteer State have a tendency to pronounce their “e” vowels like an “i”, “pin” instead of “pen”
Virginia Piedmont
A sexy accent that gets its uniqueness by fronting back vowels. People from this part of America refer to water as “wader” and “gewse” is a goose.
Alabama
Albamaians may drive you crazy )in a good way) when the talk. There is a tendency to break a one-syllable word into two (I gonna cut my hay-arr). Then there is the slow drawl that is so…hot!
Midwestern
It’s the way those from the Midwest replace vowels with an “eh” sound that is so exciting. Milk is “mehlk” and bagels are bash-gals.
The 12 states that make up the Midwest have some of their own unique accents, but generally speaking the Midwestern accent in say, Iowa and Nebraska, is subtle and sweet. The words Mary, marry, and merry all rhyme with each other.
Cajun
Visit New Orleans and you may fall in love with the Cajun accent. The “th” is swapped out for a “d” or “t” (“Wha dat over dere?”). Also, because of the French influence on Cajun you’ll come across many French loan words such as Bayou (a slow stream of water).
Yooper
An accent you will come across in Michigan. Thanks to the Scandinavian background of the dialect Yoopernese sees “Yeah” come across as “Ya”. Then there is the ubiquitous “eh” at the end of sentences. An accent that you’ll fall in love with, eh.
Miami
Here is an accent that has a similar flow to Spanish. Chuck in some Cuban loan words and you have a dialect that is irresistible.
Chicano
The accent of mainly Mexican Americans is popular in East L.A. There is a tendency to not stress the first syllable. A lazy “i” turns into and “ee” sound so that “watching” comes across as “watcheen”. Adorable!
Northwestern
An accent that seems to replace the long “e” sound with an “at”. So “elephant” becomes “aylephant”. It can be hard to distinguish it from General American pronunciation.
Californian
Those born and raised in California love to extend their vowel sounds. That’s what separates this accent from typical American dialect, duuude! Also, the vowels like to move backward and forwards. “Hut” comes out as “hit” and “back” is “bock”. The twang in this accent makes it Number 10 in the sex appeal.
St. Louis
Natives of St Louis switch out the “or” pronunciation for “ar” (“thorn” is “tharn”, “forty” sounds like “farty”). More senior inhabitants will say “worsh” rather than “wash”. Such an adorable way of speaking which sees this accent as one of the most awesome in the US
Philadelphia
If you hear a Philly speak, you will adore their pronounciation. The “o”s are rounded so that it’s more an “aw” sound. “On” comes out as “oawn”. Instead of “bike” it’s “boik”. Philly’s also drop consonants. “mussard” (rather than “mustard”). An accent that is a favorite among Americans
Hawaiian
The pidgin element of the Hawaiian accent is why it is so beloved. The “th” comes through as “d” (“dat over “dere”). When there are a bunch of consonants together the sound is completely different (“street” is “shchreet”).
Mississippi
The Deep South resonance of this accent is gorgeous. Mississippians have a “uhay” pronunciation with their “e” vowel. “Pet” comes out as “peyut”. It’s “fathuh” rather than “father”. Listen to a Missispian speak and you’ll be hooked.
Chicago
Wanna have the sexy accent of Chicago? Turn your double “t”s into double “d” (“liddle” not “little”). Let your short “u”s (rut, nut) transforms to “aww” (raught, naught) and then bask in the compliments about your amazing accent.
Mainer
One of the most popular accents in the US. Mainers don’t voice the “g” in “-ing.” Let’s go shoppin. Then there is the extension of vowels that give those from this region that classic Maine twang. “I’m leavin hea-yah”.
New York
Ah, New York. A city that is a melting pot of nationalities and cultures. Then there is that gorgeous sound in which New Yorkers speak. The hardened “t” and “d” and the drawn-out “r” which sounds like “ah.” “Teh act-uh is from Cali-fawn-ia.” Makes you feel all fuzzy inside.
Bostonian
Here is an accent that many in America love to copy. Why? Because it’s just about the sexiest one in the US. Drop the final “r” and you get “featha” as well as “togetha.” Then you have “pizzer” and “paster.” So wanna come over and have some pizzer togetha?
Texan
The hottest accent in America. The homogenization of the vowels is what excites us. “Ah’m in love with the way y’all talk.” Of course, many people love to parody the way Texans speak. Perhaps it’s because they’re jealous that their accent isn’t Number One in sexiness.
There you have the most loved accents in America. Which one(s) are your favorite and why? You can practice your Philly intonations, New York sounds, or Texan drawl. God bless American accents.
