A newly-wedded woman recently inquired to an online community if she was wrong for photoshopping her niece’s dress out of the wedding photos because it was white.
The Wedding Was Perfect – Except For One Thing
The bride was thrilled with 90% of her wedding.
“So I got married, yay! Honestly, it was my dream wedding. Everything went off without a hitch. Except for one small thing; my 16-year-old niece’s dress. It was a white, lacy, knee-length dress. She even wore lace elbow-length gloves! Honestly, it looked just like a wedding dress.”
She Felt That The Photos Were Ruined
Although the bride refused to make a big deal out of the dress, she wasn’t happy.
“I didn’t say anything to her or her parents (my brother and SIL), and I tried my best to ignore it. But when I got the first drafts back from our photographer, I couldn’t stand when I saw her in her white dress standing next to me.”
A Solution To The Problem Presented Itself
Her husband has a suggestion.
“My husband saw how upset I was and suggested we pay extra to photoshop my niece’s dress to light blue. We thought it through, and since we had some budget left, we went for it.”
She Was Finally Happy With The Photos – But Someone Else Wasn’t
She explains what happened next. “Well, last week, we got the final photos back, and they looked great! I could hardly even tell that my niece was originally wearing white, and she still looked really nice. I posted some of the photos on social media, and my SIL messaged me and was angry that I photoshopped my niece without checking with her (my SIL) first.”
The Blame Game
Her sister-in-law refused to believe the issue was really about the color of the dress.
“She accused me of thinking my niece was ugly and of body shaming her. To be clear, I did not have her body photoshopped, only the color of her dress and gloves. I don’t think I’m in the wrong, but this situation has been stressing me out, so AITA?”
The Sister-in-law Is The Issue
Users agreed the woman wasn’t wrong here. One said this:
“Not the jerk. If she didn’t want the dress to be photoshopped, she shouldn’t have let her daughter attend a wedding in a lacy white dress! The nerve of that woman!”
Conniving Sneaky Woman
Most site users felt the niece was probably unaware of the “don’t wear white” rule… but the sister-in-law, on the other hand…
“SIL is ticked… she’s probably the one who helped pick the dress and gloves and encouraged this. Niece may not know, doubtful at her age in 2023, but SIL did.”
Sister-in-law Thinks She’s So Clever
The sneakiness of the situation was not lost on the community. One user said, “SIL knew that she couldn’t wear a white dress to upstage OP without getting side-eyes, so she had her 16yo daughter wear it so they could plead ignorance. She knows exactly why her daughter’s dress was photoshopped, and she’s going to pretend like she thinks it was her daughter who was photoshopped so that she can pick the fight she always wanted.”
The Woman Should Call Her Sister-in-law Out
Someone suggested OP respond to her SIL with this:
“I didn’t want you or your daughter to get any backlash from the family for being so rude. I’d hate for your daughter to get called out for such a faux pas…”
The “Body-shaming” Remark Was Just An Excuse
No one is fooled by the sister-in-law’s flimsy retorts.
“SIL is just salty her plan was able to be photoshopped so that the pics won’t be an eternal reminder to OP that she or her niece were self-centered jerks who couldn’t handle NOT being the center of attention for one day. Smart move OP.”
Clearly, The Photographer Was An Idiot
One person remarked that the photographer should have done some “damage control.”
“And would any self-respecting wedding photographer put a 16-year-old in a white dress next to the bride? Maybe if she was 6 and looked like a flower girl. Guessing SIL pushed having niece photographed front and center next to the bride.”
Live By The Sword, Die By The Sword
All actions have consequences.
“Yeah, she knew what she was doing, so she has no say if there are some consequences, as minimal as they were. Obviously, she was afforded the grace of not having a big stink at the wedding already. But it’s not her wedding, pictures, or her call on Photoshopping. Not the jerk.”
