Not all of us are confident enough to do what we want to do whenever which is fine. However, some people avoid conflict altogether, which can be aggravating for others. In a recent online forum, people were asked what things others do that they consider spineless. We take a look at 16 of the most common reasons people are called pushovers.
Ghosting People
If you ghost people by completely ignoring someone after a date, then you are likely to be called a coward. “Ghosting” was the first answer to the question posed, as it appears to be increasingly common these days, and it is not cool.
Running Away From Difficult Conversations
Avoiding difficult conversations was something that came up a lot when people discussed being a coward. One person said, “Letting people do and say whatever they want, wherever they want, whenever they want, and not stepping in just to avoid the confrontation, the ‘it’s none of my business’ attitude”. We can’t help but think that if the world had more people calling out when people are unkind with one another, then it would be a nicer place to live.
Not Standing Up for Others
There is a fine line between keeping the peace and standing up for what is right, but as one person puts it, “Not standing up for someone you know who’s being verbally or physically abused” is not acceptable. While it is good to risk getting badly hurt yourself, sometimes we need to stick our necks out and stand up for others.
Having to Prove Your Masculinity
One online user said that when she sees men “Trying to ‘prove’ your masculinity,” it can be annoying. She goes on to say that “My friends do this a lot, and it just comes off as insecure.” Insecurity can go alongside cowardly behavior and it seems many women are tired of it.
Cheating
“Cheating” was one of the most popular comments on the thread, as many people agreed that it was never a good thing. To avoid being a coward, if you decide that the partner that you are with is not for you, then the best thing to do is tell them before you get together with someone else.
Abusing Women and Children
Hurting other people who may not be as strong as you is never a good thing, and one person pointed out that when it comes to women and children, it is a definite sign of cowardice. Another person went on to say, “Abusing any living thing” is cowardly.
Fighting
Some people would say that fighting is a brave thing to do but one person on the thread said, “Ironically fighting. It takes guts and maturity not to get yourself triggered. Only babies fight physically. Sometimes having the courage to talk openly with someone than argue with your fists is the bravest thing to do.”
Rudeness
One forum member said that cowardice could come in the form of rudeness, especially when people are unwilling to listen to others. They declared, “When people plug their ears and start muttering something under their breath instead of listening to a person’s opinion.” It is always good to listen to others and be open to changing your mind about things. Who knows, you may learn something new.
Running Away
Not being able to face up to the consequences of your actions is big on the list of cowardly things. One member says, “People that run away with no explanation when things get hard or after they make a mistake. Disrespectful as well as cowardly, tbh”. As the saying goes, “You can’t run forever.”
Not Admitting When You Are Wrong
Sometimes it can be hard to admit we are wrong, but it can be a huge learning experience, so we need to be humble and say when things do not go as well as we expected. One very observant user said, “Their faith in their conception is so weak that a third-party question can shake it, so instead of opening themselves up to growth, they dig their heels into their crumbling foundation of self-proclaimed correctness.”
Bullying
There is always a bully at school or in the workplace and quite frankly, they are cowards. This is the view of one person who said, “I remember rotten kids in the 60s bullying kids badly and never anything done about it.” Rotten is the right word when it comes to bullies, as we think most people would agree.
Not Being Truthful
“Lying” is another significant sign of cowardice among people. If we have to lie to people, we cannot be very strong people. We are not talking about little white lies but the types of lies that can get us into deep trouble or hurt others. One person said, “People who lead others on and won’t be straight up about intentions.”
