Life is full of perilous ventures, and in this modern, busy world, sometimes we lose track of the things that are good for us – and the things that are putting us in jeopardy.
Pushing Someone’s Face into a Cake
Is it funny? Of course. But this brand of comedy comes with a warning label. For one thing, some cakes have skewers inside them to help keep them erect, which can be extremely risky, especially to the eyeballs. If nothing else, if the pusher misdirects the head and smashes it into the table, the person runs the risk of a concussion.
Putting Your Feet Up on the Dash
Yes, it may look and feel cool, but if the vehicle gets rear-ended, you run the risk of paralyzing yourself. Not just that, head-on collisions have seen the legs of people putting their feet up on the dashboard get ripped clean off. Half an hour of feeling cool isn’t worth a lifetime in a wheelchair.
Backflips into a Pool
A seemingly harmless poolside trick can descend into a trip to the ER or worse – the morgue. There have been numerous misjudged backflips that have caused serious head injuries and cracked skulls. And any lifeguard worth his or her salt will tell you it’s a broken neck waiting to happen.
Lack of Sleep
A prolonged lack of sleep is an insidious way to ruin your life – or end it. Not only does sleep deprivation severely affect your quality of life, but it puts you at risk of an avoidable accident or injury. Invest in some good blackout curtains and get that shut-eye.
Driving Or Being a Car Passenger
The irony of people being afraid of airplanes (yet not thinking twice about getting behind the wheel of their SUV, which is twice as dangerous) is not lost on us. Fatal car accidents are an everyday occurrence – plane crashes are not.
Sitting Down All Day
It might seem harmless, but it is quite literally shaving years off of your life. Humans aren’t designed to be constantly static when awake, and not only does it increase your chances of health risks later down the line, but it also biologically increases the aging process. Try and get up and take a walk every 20 minutes or so – even if it’s just to the water cooler or outside for some fresh air.
Giving Honey to a Small Child
Honey is a no-no for infants under the age of one. This is due to it containing a type of bacteria that increases the chance of the child’s intestines producing toxins that can cause infant botulism.
Helium Sucking
We hate to be a party pooper, but inhaling helium comes with a risk. Basically, helium isn’t oxygen, but the body thinks it is. Too much helium sucking can cause oxygen deprivation, which can cause lightheadedness, fainting, and even death.
Swimming in Areas of Smooth Water
This is only applicable if all the surrounding areas of the ocean look rough. What’s happening is a rip tide is forming below the surface, which poses the very real threat of dragging you out to sea or drowning you there and then.
Meddling with Wildlife
Just because some colorful exotic-looking bug or plant looks harmless, doesn’t mean it is. If you stumble across wildlife you’re unfamiliar with – leave it be. You wouldn’t eat a berry you didn’t recognise, so don’t mess with unknown wildlife – it could be poisonous. Heck, leave wildlife alone altogether.
Thinking Moose Want To Be Pals
They are like the lovechild of a cow and a deer and they have a funny name, so they’re sound, right? Wrong. Moose are incredibly protective of their young, as well as territorial and wary of humans – and not only will they charge or kick, they will happily trample on your broken body too.
Garage Door Springs
Garage door springs are in a state of permanent tension, meaning they are more susceptible to breaking or sudden failure, causing them to crash down. Garage doors may not look heavy, but they are. Never loiter under one longer than necessary.
Driving When Tired
Recent studies have shown that driving while tired is as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. Not only do you have slower reaction times, but you have reduced attention and awareness, and falling asleep behind the wheel is often fatal.
Getting Too Close to Bison
When bison fight, get the hell out of the way. You’re not even safe in your vehicle. Considering the average bison weighs up to a ton, they are extremely fast and agile hunters – and if startled or spooked by a human, their full weight – plus those gore-happy antlers – will easily send you off to meet your maker.
Stairs
We take stairs for granted and many of us walk up and down them multiple times a day, but fail to pay attention, or adhere to bad habits such as playing on your phone while walking downstairs or even walking with your hands in your pockets, putting you at risk of falling.
Not Boiling Kidney Beans Long Enough
The dangers of not boiling dried kidney beans properly are not reported enough, but failing to do so can lead to lectin toxicity. This effectively causes food poisoning and symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, and other such unpleasantries.
Coconuts… Yes, Really
So, this is only a risk to those who live in areas where coconuts are grown, such as Florida and Barbados, but believe it or not, you’re 20 times more likely to get killed by a falling coconut than you are to experience a shark attack. Death by coconut is a real danger!
Letting Your Kids Spend Too Much Time Online
While the internet has many benefits for adults and children alike, unfortunately it is a breeding ground for predators, trolls, and bullies. Not only is it the go-to platform for predators, but there are also unhealthy or unsafe online groups and websites out there. Your kid’s web time should be limited and monitored.
