The Choosing Beggers subreddit is always fun to dip into the lives of people who beg and plead for the silliest things. The forum did not disappoint recently when one fan posted about their 3-month trip, with the first flight being from New Zealand to LA. The 12-hour flight was booked with premium economy seats at an additional $60 to give more room for the original poster (OP), who is 6ft3.

The Man Paid for The Luxury Leg Room
Upon boarding the plane, the OP and his partner were met with an older couple in their 70s sitting in their seats. The OP asked if they had got their seats mixed up, pointing to the screen with the OP’s name, as they do on Air New Zealand. The couple said they had not got mixed up and asked the OP to sit in their seats ten rows back, which had no legroom.
The Man Was Polite and Offered To Help Move Their Bags
The OP relayed his conversation, asking the couple if they expected to sit in their seats, and when they said, “yes, that would be nice,” he told them he had paid extra for these seats due to the legroom.
He kindly asked them to move and offered to help them move their bags. The flight attendant came along, and the old person announced that the OP wanted them to move seats. The OP showed the attendant his ticket and the screen after they asked him to move to the seats at the back, and they went on to correct the old couple, saying they should be the ones to move.
The Old People Tried the Sad Eyes
The old couple asked for an upgrade, but the attendant told them it was a full flight, so they had no premium seats left. The old people then did a ‘Pikachu’ face, and when they had to move to their designated seats the OP got a lot of dirty looks but stuck to his guns as he paid for the extra legroom for a reason.
He Was Told Not To Feel Guilty
The first comment on the thread was to reassure him about the stink eye he got from other passengers, pointing out that “Those people didn’t jump at the opportunity to donate their seats?” Another person commented on this, saying, “I have no idea why the other people who paid extra for legroom would glare at this guy.”
Others pointed out that if the old couple could afford to pay for a flight to LA, they could afford the extra legroom, with one person saying, “Honestly, if they can afford a flight to LA and actually needed the leg space, they could have bought it.”
The Man Should Get What He Paid For
The health issue aside (needing extra legroom), many readers said he should get what he paid for, saying, “Health is irrelevant. You get what you pay for, not what people deem acceptable based on your age. Those old people knew what they were doing.” Most users feel the same way, and others point out that “Poor planning on their part does not constitute an emergency on yours.”
This is a classic case of people thinking they can get what they want just because they are older, which is good apart from when they make people lose out on what they have paid for. Better planning is needed for this old couple, we think.
