A university student headed to Reddit recently to ask Am I The A**hole (AITA)? The post detailed how the original poster’s (OP) sister was trailing a move overseas. She could not take her two dogs with her, so she sought somebody to watch them for six months.

Here Is The Backstory
The OP told readers that they were 21, in university, and living at home with no money to move out into their place. Putting two and two together, the OP’s sister offered her sibling the opportunity to stay rent-free in her home without worrying about paying utility bills.
If, like us, you are thinking, what a great offer, you will be confused to hear that the OP did not believe it was such a good idea.
The OP proclaimed that they should be getting paid to mind the dogs as they take up a lot of time, need walking, and limit the opportunities for the OP to find part-time work.
Feeling that they should be paid for minding the dog, the sister said she would pay if the OP wanted to go on vacation or needed to study during exam periods but would not be paying for everyday dog sitting. The siblings’ mom agreed that living somewhere close to uni, rent, and bill-free was more than generous, and the OP should be grateful.
Reddit Did Not Hold Back
Cue a swathe of support for the OP’s sister, who they thought was very generous towards her sibling. One poster said, “They are paying you – in kind. Overpaying… the value of what they give you far exceeds what you give them.”
It seems the OP underestimated how much renting and bills would cost her. However, they admitted they could not afford their own place at one point, so we are unsure what they were thinking.
The number of people saying that the OP was the a**hole outweighed any small amount of empty for them. One commenter was shocked by how naive the OP was, saying, “Yeah, this OP is over the top delusional. Like what? Wow, just wow. OP, YTA.”
Some Posters Were More Insightful
Other posters gave more insight, commenting, “Definitely YTA here for a complete lack of self-awareness. You can’t have your cake (free rent, utilities, etc.) and then expect your sister to pay you to look after the dogs in exchange for that. If you don’t want to look after the dogs, get your own flat, pay for it, and deal with the stress of struggling to have a roof over your head versus taking dogs to walk twice a day for 15-20min.” That is the truth there. How can the OP have the best of both worlds?
The OP quickly realized her mistake, but it was too late. They posted an update to tell those invested in her story that the sister now has somebody else lined up. The OP’s cousin wants to move to the area and is happy to live rent-free.
At the same time, they look after the dogs and may even stay on and contribute to the mortgage if the sister decides a move away is not for her. It sounds like the cousin is on to a winner, and the OP needs to realize a good thing when they see one!
