Reddit was the go-to destination for one young woman questioning her decision to attend an event after learning of her boyfriend’s diagnosis from his doctor.
The 25-year-old headed to Am I The A**hole to ask if she was being unreasonable for going to an event with her stepsister after learning her boyfriend pulled out due to bad news about his health.
The woman works in event planning and is often invited to significant events with exciting recent events. The woman had planned to go with her boyfriend and stepsister but was told that morning by her boyfriend that he may not be able to go depending on what happened at his appointment.
Boyfriend Had Bad News From His Doctor
The woman told readers that she got a text from her boyfriend saying he had something to tell her, which made her worry, so she called him immediately.
He revealed that the doctor told him he was anemic and needed to take supplements. The woman went on to say that she showed empathy and said she would always support and love him.
She then asked if he would like to take his mind off things by attending the event that evening, but he declined to say that he did not want to go. The original poster (OP) said she would go with her stepsister and ended the phone call.
An Argument Ensued
The OP told readers that her boyfriend called her back to tell her how selfish she was for still going out and did not understand when she said she did not want to let her stepsister down.
As the OP would be driving and not drinking, she could take and look after her stepsister. The second phone call ended with the boyfriend telling the OP to be safe and that they would see each other the next day.
The event seemed to run smoothly, although the OP said she spent much time alone and was home by 2 am. She called her boyfriend, who was up playing video games, and he answered by saying, “look, who cares about me again.”
He said she “went out without him knowing he’s upset, but I love partying and meeting new people so much that I didn’t think to stay with him on the phone.”
Reddit Responds
Looking to Reddit to make sense of her boyfriend’s reaction to her night out, she found that many people agreed that she was not the a**hole.
Most of the responses were about the nature of the boyfriend’s illness. One person said, “When I saw the title, I expected it to be cancer, some kind of degenerative disorder, or something requiring major surgery.” Another person commented, “I feel like the majority of women I’ve known have had anemia at least at some point. This is like a fresh take on the “man cold” or something.”
While some people empathized with the boyfriend a little, they did not think that the OP should have canceled her plans, saying, “I’m trying to give him the benefit of the doubt for his overreaction, but either way, this is not something you cancel your afternoon snack over, let alone an event you’ve been looking forward to.”
There was lots of ridicule about how much the boyfriend overacted, with one woman summing it up like this “When my doctor told me to take iron pills and vitamins, I was like, “ok” and I told my husband, and he was like, “ok,” And then I got some iron pills and vitamins and took them, and everyone was ok.”
