Christmas sweater cookies are so much fun to make. Even though these have the word “ugly” in the title, they’re actually so cute and fun!

This is one of those recipes that everyone in the family can help and do together so if you have a free night or weekend and are looking for something family-friendly and fun, these Ugly Sweater Cookies need to be on your baking radar!

How hard are these Christmas Sweater Cookies to decorate?

As long as you follow the directions and pay attention, you’ll have no trouble decorating these cookies. And even if you make a mistake, who cares?! These are UGLY cookies after all so the more crazy creativity, the better.

How do you store these ugly sweater cookies once baked?

Once you bake and decorate them, make certain to store them in an airtight container so they don’t get soft. Also, keep in mind that you don’t want to stack them so you won’t mess up the decorations.

I like to use a big plastic container with a lid and just lay them in there next to each other! That way none of the decorations mess up.

How to make Ugly Sweater Cookies

These ugly sweater cookies are so simple and fun, I think you’re going to have a new holiday obsession! Just gather up the ingredients and get started.

Ingredients needed to make these Ugly Sweater Cookies

Cookies

  • 1 cup coconut oil, room temperature
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, clear
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3 cups flour

Recipe to make these easy Ugly Christmas Sweater Cookies

Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees.

Next, take the oil and sugar and cream them together with a mixer. Once done, eggs and the vanilla extract. Mix together and set aside.

Grab the flour and whisk together the baking powder and flour in a separate bowl. Once done, combine with the other sugar mixture in 1/3 increments.

Keep in mind that the cookie dough will be a bit crumbly but once you dump it out onto parchment paper (don’t skip – important) and start to work it, it will get better.

Take your rolling pin and roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. They can’t be any thinner than that.

Start to cut out your cookies now. (Don’t forget to order your cookie-cutter online.)

Once they’re all cut out, move the whole parchment paper to your cookie sheet.

Put the cookies in the oven and bake them for 10 minutes. Keep an eye on them as they won’t brown. This means you’ll need to pull them out at 10 minutes.

Take them out of the oven and put them on a rack to cool.

To make the icing, combine all of the ingredients together in a small bowl and beat on low.

Set aside 1/2 the icing in a second bowl.

Take one portion of the icing and add in about 8 drops of red food coloring. Stir.

With the other portion of icing, add in about 6 drops of green food coloring and stir.

Take the red frosting and put it into a decorating bag with your smallest round tip.

Take and pipe an edge all the way around the outer edge of 1/2 the cookies. Fill it in, covering the whole area.

Take the green icing and pipe an edge around the outer edge of the cookies. Fill in the shirts and cover the whole area.

Allow the icing to dry for 2-3 hours.

Take and make dots on one shirt using the edible food marker.

Have fun and draw a Christmas tree and add sprinkles for ornaments.

Take a toothpick or Scribner tool and draw a reindeer on some of the shirts.

Add in a tiny drop of vanilla extract with a little bit of glitter into a small bowl.

Take a brush and paint a stripe across some of the shirts.

Let it dry for 2-3 hours.

  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Red gel food coloring
  • Black gel food coloring
  • Green gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees.
