A young mom-to-be was called out on Reddit when she posted to the popular Am I The A**hole subreddit to tell readers about her secret pregnancy.
The woman revealed that she was eight months pregnant and had chosen to keep her pregnancy a secret until further down the line. You may think eight months is a long time to keep a secret, but the original poster (OP) said that a few months into her pregnancy, her sister-in-law announced her pregnancy, so she and her husband felt awkward revealing their news.
The OP gave some background to say she has been married for six months but has been with her husband since she was 14.

She Had A Stillbirth at 17
The OP also revealed that at 17, she had a complicated pregnancy that ended in a premature stillbirth which is one of the reasons she and her husband have been cautious about announcing this pregnancy.
It has been easy to hide her pregnancy as she has not seen family for a while and has a small stomach, so it looks like she has gained weight.
At first, the OP did not intend to go to her SIL’s baby shower, but her SIL insisted, so she went and tried her best to hide her bump.
All Was Well Until She Started Cramping
All was going well until an hour into the shower, the OP started to get cramps, and she quietly told her husband she needed to leave for the hospital.
On the way out, the OP experienced a sharp pain which led her to stumble and grab a table, which brought attention to herself. Thinking she was in labor, her husband showed she was pregnant, and they had to leave. However, by the time they reached the hospital, the pains had stopped as it turned out to be a false labor.
While they were relieved that the baby was not coming too early, they were unhappy to be met with an influx of text messages from the SIL and other party guests. They all stated how “messed up” it was to not tell anyone about the pregnancy and to perform a “baby stunt” at the shower. The OP was very annoyed that nobody had texted her to see if she and the baby were ok.
The Woman Heard Some Home Truths
While there was some empathy for how the OP felt, many people believed her to be an a**hole for keeping a huge secret. One person said, “You are eight months along, can go into labor any day, and it comes out at your SIL’s baby shower? That is extremely disrespectful. I get why you kept it private in the beginning. “ Another person said, “It doesn’t sound like OP had any malicious intent, but going to the baby shower was not a smart move. This would have been a good time to deploy a white lie and tell the family “so sorry.”
Others understood the OP more when they said, “It came out because she thought she was in labor. She made every effort for it not to be about her.” Another Reddit user commented about her fear of losing her baby: “Until you’ve lost a pregnancy and held your dead child in your arms, you have no right to judge. She was terrified she’d have another stillborn.”
Many Reddit users were annoyed at how much the woman was judged for “upstaging” her SIL, with one person commenting, “So essentially women in the same families just aren’t allowed to be pregnant at the same time, lest they accidentally “upstage” each other?”
